I print labels from eBay and have started to use UPS more. It shows that the label includes $100 in free insurance. UPS smashed the heck out of a box and the contents shattered. I know how to put in a claim with USPS, but I looked at the UPS website and saw nothing about putting in an insurance claim. I do not have a UPS account either, I saw at the top to sign in, but I have never registered with them. Could you give me some direction on how to put in an insurance claim with UPS and what to expect? Does the buyer keep everything, box, item, packing material, and then have to take it somewhere? This is required often by USPS, and I HATE to ask a buyer to do it! They received a smashed item and then have to drag the item to the post office, stand in line, give it to the clerk and this all during a pandemic! Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately, you are going to learn the pitfalls of the eBay - UPS partnership. Since eBay is the account holder and "shipper of record", they are the ones that must deal with UPS on an insurance claim. You have no standing with UPS. However, you will find that when you contact eBay, they will tell you to contact UPS and thus the ping pong game begins. If you do actually get eBay to help you out and give you the information you need to open a claim, most likely, assuming you win, the insurance $ will go to eBay. Then you'll have a new fight on your hands trying to get them to give it to you. Good luck.

Sounds horrible. Thank you for the information. If it absolutely cannot be broken, then I will use UPS. (They do offer a great discount, but not so great if I have to pay $250 for a broken item that was double boxed and padded up as if it were going to Russia. ) I was hoping to recover $100 as the label maker states. I have lived and learned. With the return price of the shipping, item, and original purchase of the item, I am $350 lighter in the wallet.

@collectintime I have my own UPS account that I use mostly to ship stuff to relatives, etc. I think if I was going to ship something expensive like that, I'd forego the eBay discount and ship it with my account.
Anyway, go to this page and file the UPS/FedEX Damage Claim form and see if it works.
