I purchased a replacement cover for my food processor from a seller whose description indicated returns were accepted. When the cover arrived, I saw that is was too tight a fit and couldn't be used.
I had a dialog with the seller about this and since he couldn't help me figure out what was wrong, I requested a return and waited for shipping instructions. When I didn't receive those instructions I messaged him again and we went in circles for a bit while he asked for the item number, order number etc. Finally when I was out of patience I went to eBay customer service and found that the return request had been closed, and I no longer had any possibility of appeal.
I feel that the seller wasn't being straight with me about the return never refusing the return outright. But surely he would have known that there was a time limit that would expire and close my return automatically.

You can't leave feedback after the time limit expires. Always get a refund and never a replacement to avoid this problem. You can still file with paypal if that is how you paid.

Lots of those type of sellers here, they won't help you take your money back.
Please understand this isn't a retail store where, when they give you a refund the person working behind the counter still gets paid.
Here on ebay, the costs of a return comes out of the seller's pockets.
No, it does not excuse their behavior but that is most likely why they act that way...
Your BEST defense is to educate yourself on how returns work, because if you are well versed in this area of ebay then you do not need the seller's assistance to process a return from your end. Whether they issue a label or not, all that and more can be easily handled from the buyer's end, again without assistance from the seller (which will rarely be completely forthcoming).

as others have mentioned you can figure out how returns work and next time you can use the MBG to your advantage
ebay has given this tool to the buyers,it allows you to make a claim without having to really deal with the seller. The MBG really does empower a buyer when they know how to use it, it lets you cut to the chase
when used correctly there is not much a seller can really do about it
good luck

It may be a stretch, but it sounds like the seller knew what he was doing and purposely gave you a stall tactic to let your return time out. Sellers are not required to help you thru the returns process. Some may not want to help you from the start, especially if it means going thru extra trouble for you to make them lose more money. It's essentially like you showing someone how to shoot you in the leg. Yes, I've helped these buyers before... I have strong legs 🙂
Not all sellers are honest. Best in the future to ask for help from ebay (or other members here in the board) for something like this.

Thanks for the feedback. What amazed me is that this seller seems to have 100% positive feedback.

Thanks. It irks me though that he has 100% positive feedback. I like your suggestion to file with Paypal.
