In this example, how is "Sell as Lot" calculated: I listed a blue pair of shoes and when boxed up it weighs 1 lb 8 oz. I'm selling a green pair (same style and size), and it weighs the same when packaged up. Someone asked me what the shipping would be for both going to the same address; the 2 pairs of shoes weigh 2 lb 9 oz when boxed together.
How does eBay calculate the weight and shipping price so the seller's costs are covered and the buyer gets charged less for shipping since only one box will be used when items are shipped together? For example, do they take a guess at how much to deduct for an extra box?
Thanks.

eBay does calculate shipping. You do. You will enter the box size and expected box weight of all items-whether one box or multiples. One box with two items will be cheaper than two boxes each with one item-in theory. Then you can agree to take a discount off that price or not.

@goodtreats The seller is who calculates the shipping, not eBay.
For your example, the buyer can purchase both listings separately. You can ship them together and do a partial refund for the savings.
You can mark one of the pairs of shoes as free shipping and increase the shipping on the other. Then ask the buyer to purchase them after you've made these adjustments.
You can pull one listing then create a new listing for both pairs together, with the correct shipping amount. Multiple ways for you to do this and make your buyer happy while keeping both sales. Best of luck to you....

The calculated shipping is based on the weight of the two items but the box size doesn't change.

I don't think I would mark the shipping zero on one and an increased shipping on the other. Reason is, the buyer might then opt to only purchase the zero shipping one, and then you are stuck.
What I do is... before the buyer purchases or pays, I will cancel one listing as buyer request and modify the title and weight on the other listing to include both pairs. I add "for a special buyer" to the title too.
