This issue kind of snuck up on me today. A buyer placed and paid for an order, and then messaged me about the possibility of me having another added item, that I may not have listed yet. He was correct, so I asked for him to wait a few hours (until the next day), and I would get that new listing up for him, so he could purchase it also, and have both items/listings/sales ship out together. Sounds like it should be smooth and simple, right? It also saves me a box, and him some shipping costs.
I would just print a shipping label for his first purchase, pack the items together, and add that Tracking number to the second item listing sale, and mark that one as shipped. Both Sales now have the same Tracking number. That all goes perfectly smooth, as it should.
The issue I did not expect, is when purchasing insurance (through eBay). Now all of a sudden, I have two $200 items in a single box, and that would be quite a hit, if that single package gets lost. So I go to buy insurance. I can/could not find any way to insure both items (separate listing sales) in a single shipment. Am I missing a way?
I am not allowed of course, to double the insurance on a single listing, so that it would cover both items. The insurance amount can only be, up to equal the selling price of that single, first sold listing. I had both items packed carefully, sealed shut, and weighed, so I didn't want to open it all back up, split into two shipments, and re-weigh everything again, as the clock was ticking, and my 'get it out before close' on Friday window was quickly closing.
What should I have done differently, and still be able to combine both items into a single package? Buy insurance from USPS, instead of eBay? Would that have worked?

If it's two different orders, it should be shipped that way.
You could haven canceled the first order, then they could buy both items on the same order.

Well, that's a thought Ken. Thank you.
My first thought with that is. Once the buyer pays, the listing is no longer live (if a single item listing). So then that listing would need to be relisted. I don't think eBay automatically re-lists items when orders are canceled.
Then anyone can come buy and snatch it up before the OG buyer gets by the newly re-listed item, right? That's a risk, and these are rare items, and the first buyer by this point is already proud he managed to buy one. To then lose it to another buyer because I canceled it, and had to re-list, in order to get insurance, would surely burn him up. 😏 Not to mention all of the time that can go by, waiting for replies from Buyers. I was also needing/wanting to get this out on a Friday afternoon, so it could travel all weekend. Buyers love Monday morning deliveries, for purchases made on Friday afternoons. 😊

Just purchase you shipping label from Pirate Ship and you will be able to purchase the insurance. The shipping will be about the same price as eBay but their insurance is much cheaper. Even if you combine listing into one listing Pirate Ship insurance is still way cheaper. Anytime I need more than $100 for insurance I use them. For you $400 items $3.95 for insurance.
Domestic Shipments: $0.75 for up to $50, then $0.80 per $100
