I bought an item that apparently was shipped first class, tracking is:
Can first class be insured? Otherwise the buyer and I would think seller would be nervous.

OP, Harry Winston once shipped the Hope diamond first class. Whether or not the seller chose to insure the package is frankly, none of your business. It does not concern you in the slightest.

Well I have my suspicions....

It’s not odd if this is for research purposes and the buyer plans to use the insurance 😉

You can buy insurance separately for First Class Mail when you print your labels on eBay. You have the option of buying the insurance through USPS, and Shipcover. Also, eBay has a third party insurance application Inkfrog's Shipsaver which is significantly cheaper than the first two mentioned. I use Shipsaver all the time for first class, Parcel Select and Fedex Smartpost packages because they even cover your shipping charge for lost or damaged items. I know if you print labels through Stamps.com you can insure your parcels with them too. Sellers who don't buy the insurance are at risk for damaged or lost items. I see it all the time because I buy cookie jars and most of the people aren't insuring the package. If they are buying third party insurance you won't see any documentation on the label.

I use the cookie jar method of insurance.
Never buy insurance and put all that money in my cookie jar.

That is a good thing as that means your package isn't lost. You can relax a bit now.
since the date of your post on 1.25.2018 there has been a few more days for the package to head to your location.
FYI USPS does not consider an item "lost" until two weeks after the ESTIMATED delivery date has passed. Meaning no insurance claim will be issued until that time has past.
