Has USPS ever recycled a tracking number too early and screwed up your transaction?

Obviously this happened to me, but I didn't realize until after I shipped. It was too late to void the label and buy a new one.

The buyer wanted to know why their package was being RTS. I looked and, sure enough, lots of tracking scans showing that the package was unclaimed in TX (my buyer is on the east coast) and was being returned... back in April.

I bought this label on July 18th. My regional facility checked their intranet and it says tracking is set to expire at the beginning of August, in less than 2 weeks.

The old scans interfered with the new scans showing up so I was in the dark on the location of the package until today when, finally, an out for delivery scan in the buyer's state popped up. None of the scans from Mon-Wed are appearing and I know that at the very least my carrier scanned it.

So now this tracking data is going to disappear in less than 2 weeks, screwing things up if I end up with some kind of claim situation. Thanks, USPS. Ya couldn't wait a couple more weeks before reassigning that tracking number?
