HOW TO CONTINUE SELLING TO CANADA WHEN SHIPPING IS SO COSTLY

I have over the years sold items to Canadian buyers and enjoy doing so.  How can I continue doing so when the cost of shipping is so costly?  I had a buyer who bought a piece of jewelry but the cost of shipping was extremely high.  The shipping $25.00.  I had no idea that it had gotten so expensive to ship to Canada.  I am so conflicted as to whether I should stop selling to Canada or charge the $25.00 shipping fee.

Sign up for the Global Shipping Program. Yes, it will cost them even more and you won't sell as much to Canada but you won't have to worry about it. They take care of just about everything. You just print the labels and collect the money.

I did try sending a package through eBay's shipping and delivery service.  It is a slow process as you have to first ship the item to the location and then eBay does the shipping.  I like getting items out to buyers asap.  I guess if they really want the item they will pay the extra cost.  A buyer told me he paid less for getting an item from Hong Kong to Canada.

$25 to ship a piece of jewelry??  Are you using priority mail?  You know you can use first class international which also provides E-Delcon tracking online and the cost is less than half of that.   A package weighing under 8 ounces is $12.25 or so and one up to 2 pounds is $20.75.  Less with the discount if you print your labels through eBay.

The only reason to use priority is if the item is over $750 and requires a signature on delivery.  Which I wouldn't do in the first place since the online signature isn't available on just about every class of USPS mail.

Good luck with your sales!

HOW TO CONTINUE SELLING TO CANADA WHEN SHIPPING IS SO COSTLY

Joe,

Thank you for your suggestion.  I have been using first class international which is why I was surprised when I went to print the shipping label and saw the $25. I tried to see if there were any other options and it kept going back to priority mail.  The address was somewhere in Ontario.  This is the very first time I was not able to change the shipping to first class.  So unusual.  The buyer, however, was able to give me an address on the US/Niagara border and the item is on its way for far less.  Thank you again.

Which ebay Service did you try?

The Global Shipping Program transit times into CA are faster than USPS and ebay International Standard Delivery, even though it goes through a domestic hub.

Currently, eISD (ebay International Standard Delivery) is faster and cheaper than USPS and GSP.

USPS - Higher Rates than eISD, Lower Rates compared to GSP

GSP - Higher Rates than both USPS and eISD - This is because the insurance is added automatically and the responsibilities belong to ebay once the item reached the KY hub. Seller is also protected for INRs and negative feedback

eISD - Lower rates than USPS and GSP, longer transit times over GSP.

As a Canadian buyer I look for sellers who use USPS only as GSP charges $6+ import charge even on a $20 item.  We get $150 duty free so to pay an "import charge"  is a rip off.  I purchased 4 golf grips and paid $11.50 for shipping, Florida to Vancouver Canada, another seller with GSP $22.50 for shipping.

Please see the correct de minimus charges for CA, that the GSP program follows:

Customs Notice 20-18

Ottawa, May 02, 2020

1. Further to Customs Notice 20-14, Implementation of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), dated , this notice provides information related to the implementation of the CUSMA de minimis thresholds with respect to the application of customs duties and taxes on goods imported into Canada and transported by courier from the United States or Mexico.

2. Under CUSMA, Canada has agreed to maintain a de minimis threshold of at least CAD$150.00 for customs duties, and CAD$40.00 for taxes, at the time or point of importation of goods shipped by courier from the United States or Mexico. There are otherwise no changes to Canada’s existing de minimis framework. Accordingly, postal shipments from the U.S. or Mexico, as well as any courier or postal shipments from any other country, will continue to have a customs duty and tax remission threshold value of up to CAD$20.00. Please note that the new thresholds will apply as of the date the CUSMA enters into force and, for greater clarity, time of importation means the time of release.

Implementation of the CUSMA de minimis threshold

3. The CUSMA customs duty and taxation de minimis commitments are being implemented through changes to the Excise Tax Act and the Courier Imports Remission Order.

4. The Excise Tax Act is being amended by clause 39 of Bill C-4, Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement Implementation Act, on the date CUSMA enters into force.

5. The Courier Imports Remission Order is also being amended and this amendment will also enter into effect on the date the CUSMA enters into force.

The Courier Imports Remission Order upon CUSMA entry into force

6. As defined in the Courier Imports Remission Order (CIRO) “courier means a commercial carrier that is engaged in scheduled international transportation of shipments of goods other than goods imported by mail”.

7. Upon entry into force of the CUSMA, the following provisions will apply to imported goods that are transported by courier into Canada:

  • Goods with a value for duty of CAD$20.00 or less will have any applicable customs duties and taxes waived when imported from any country;
  • Goods with a value for duty CAD$20.01 or greater that are imported from any country other than the United States or Mexico will continue to be subject to any applicable duties and taxes;
  • Goods with a value for duty of CAD$40.00 or less will have any applicable customs duties and taxes waived when imported from the United States or Mexico only;
  • Goods with a value for duty of CAD$40.01 or greater, up to and including CAD$150.00, will be free of customs duties (however, taxes will remain applicable) when imported from the United States or Mexico only; and
  • Goods with a value for duty CAD$150.01 or greater will be subject to any applicable duties and taxes when imported from any country, including the United States or Mexico.

8. In order to qualify for the CAD$40.00 or CAD$150.00 de minimis thresholds set out in the CUSMA, the goods do not need to originate according to the CUSMA Chapter 4, Rules of Origin, but rather be imported from the United States or Mexico. If the goods were not produced in the United States or Mexico, they must have entered into the commerce of either the United States or Mexico prior to being imported into Canada in order to benefit from the CUSMA de minimis relief. For greater certainty, goods that are shipped from a non-CUSMA country and transit or are trans-shipped through the United States or Mexico, without having entered the commerce of the CUSMA partners, would not be entitled to the CAD$40.00 or CAD$150.00 de minimis thresholds.

In answer to your question as to which eBay Service I tried.  It was eISD.

My experience using USPS over the years was never a problem, however, the cost of using USPS has gone up significantly.  I recently tried eISD and it took a long time for the buyer to get her item.  I much prefer using USPS, but just this once, was unable to select the least expensive as it kept defaulting to USPS Priority.  In the end, the buyer had me ship his item to a US address.  I think I will continue using USPS.  I have had a good experience selling to Canada.

I agree with you as my experience using USPS is the better way to go.  I am, however, wishes the cost would be less expensive to ship to Canada.

An 8-ounce package from eastern USA to western Canada is $12.25 via First Class Mail.

What service did you use, and how heavy was the piece of jewelry that you were mailing?

I use USPS First Class International.  It appears, however, when printing my label generated by eBay it went to some default that kept requiring that the item be sent by Priority Mail.   All the effort I made to send it by first class it kept defaulting to priority.  This is the very first time I have had this issue.

Alas!  Shipping costs are high even for domestic shipping and even worse for international.  Unfortunately, I don't see them going down any time soon.

I've seen that glitch default setting before.  If I remember correctly, it would somehow be set to flat rate packaging thus the higher priority price.  I had to switch it to "custom" packaging in order to select first class international as advertised in my listing.

Don't get me started on the default for Ebay Standard International shipping...
