Sold books. Mailed books. Tracking shows they made it to Iowa. Stuck in USPS facilty. Must be lost. Buyer of course wants to cancel order. Opens "item not received" case. I immediately provide tracking number and quick statement. Hear npthing until yesterday that Ebay sided with buyer and refunded them with my paypal funds. How can this be? ISNT THERE EBAY PROTECTION FOR SELLERS ? I thought that as long as we could provide tracking that shows item in possession by USPS we were covered ?? I am out nearly $50 and it is wrong. HELP !! I emailed ebay today. Of course there is no longer a way to contact ebay by phone.

Tracking showing in transit is not good enough for seller protection. It has to be delivered for seller protection. Ebay won't reverse their decision in this case.

In an inr case eBay will side with the seller if tracking shows the item was delivered to the buyers payment address, not just because the item was mailed. The only way not to lose money when an item is lost is to have insurance however, since mail doesn’t get lost often, it doesn’t make sense to pay extra for insurance for lower cost items.
Think of it from the buyers side...should they be out the money when an item is lost?
You may have received an unresolved claim defect if you didn’t refund the buyer before ebay stepped in. In a situation like this when the item is long overdue, you really should refund when the buyer opens a claim.

Yes, if tracking shows the item was delivered, then you're covered.
If the package is lost and the last tracking was March 22nd, why shouldn't the buyer get their money back.

There is protection if the package has received a tracking scan within the last week or so-- in other words, if it is showing recent movement within the system, they will usually extend the estimated delivery time to allow it to reach the buyer.
This has been almost a month with no movement whatsoever, so no, eBay will not cover you in a case like this. Even the USPS itself would consider it lost in this situation, as it has been more than three weeks with no tracking scans whatsoever.

For a $50 loss it might be worth paying $13 for a package recall. You won't be charged unless the package is successfully recalled. Since it's Media Mail I believe you will have to pay return shipping as well, but it still might be worth it to minimize the loss if USPS can locate the package. It's been a month so I don't think the chances of locating the package are great even with the recent delays factored in. Still ... worth a shot.

since eBay hacked 10% on shipping cost Paypal 3% to process they are also responsible to return 13% on the overall purchase to the buyer that is the protection the seller should expect. Simple.

No. It is the responsibility of the seller to take their own precautions in case of a situation like this happening, be that by insuring the package with insurance or by having their own cookie jar insurance to cover any postal mishaps.
