Guaranteed delivery not delivered

I specifically bought an item because it had GUARENTEED delivery on the Monday before Christmas. It was not delivered, and 4 days later still not delivered. The seller is unapologetic and blames ebay and the post office. Why are sellers allowed to choose GUARENTEED Delivery with no intention of delivering on time? What is the point of GUARENTEED delivery when the seller has no responsibility to deliver on time. The only compensation I get is the item maybe arriving way past Christmas and $5 to spend on Ebay, which I don't really want to shop ebay anymore after this. I'm so frustrated.

If the seller shipped on time and the way the listing stated it is not their fault.  They have no control over the company delivering

guaranteed delivery doesn’t mean it will definitely be there that day.  If just guarantees that if it isn’t you will be compensated for it being late

not all sellers opt in.  If a sellers items qualify for fast and free eBay automatically puts them as guaranteed delivery

I'm tired of companies making up their own definitions of words

guar·an·tee
/ˌɡerənˈtē/

  1. provide a formal assurance or promise, especially that certain conditions shall be fulfilled relating to a product, service, or transaction.

The seller doesn't choose it.

They aren’t making up what it means.  They guarantee it will be there by then or compensation if it’s not.  The assurance is that if it isn’t you’ll be compensated

The seller does choose it-

Per ebay-

Signing up for Guaranteed Delivery

To take part, you'll need to register for eBay Guaranteed Delivery - opens in new window or tab. If you're eligible, you can choose the items you want to be covered by the program.

They can’t offer a definitely will be there because they offer these guarantees for shipping companies that don’t even guarantee such.  They are just basing it on an estimated delivery time.

I don't want compensation. I bought it because they guaranteed it would be there. It's been 4 days past the GUARENTEED date and it's still not here. That's not even close to being delivered by their guaranteed date. I don't want $5, I wanted the item before Christmas. $5 doesn't do anything to make up for no Christmas present for someone.

Not always the case.  As I said earlier sellers whose listings qualify for eBay’s “fast and free” are automatically included in guaranteed delivery now.  The seller has no choice in it

Their estimated delivery time is way off. 4 days later and it's still not delivered.

Well that’s the policy and what you agree to by using eBay.  eBay can’t really promise It will definitely be there.  Things happen packages get lost weather delays happen shipping companies get backed up at this time of year.

Yes I understand that.  I’ve had several packages where the delivery estimate wasn’t met some a week late. All the guarantee delivery is is an estimate that eBay says if it’s not met they will compensate the buyer

Go to the resolution center to open an INR.

You will get either a refund for the item, or if it arrives you can follow the procedures in the Guaranteed Delivery policy for a voucher, or return.

I did not opt into GD, but based on the location of a buyer, eBay may show GD on the listing. Not my choice.

eBay "guarantees" delivery by a certain date, not the seller.  This is firmly eBay's baby delusion.  To be fair, the date is supposedly based upon the seller's handling time and historic ship/delivery dates.  But, as we all know, natural disaster and holidays tend to skew all shipping times.

Nope, unfortunately it's not the seller, it's some marketing person who pitched the idea to corporate at eBay and corporate fell for it.  The seller is likely experimenting with the program to see if it will bring in much needed sales.

Just as a note:  we were opted in - without our knowledge or consent - to the guaranteed program by eBay itself.  Fortunately, most of our listings do not qualify yet somehow we consistently get our items to buyers ahead of (or at least not late) schedule without eBay's funny little marketing ploy.
