Got a question about using freight to ship...

Howdy!  My mom would like to sell her Singer treadle sewing machine...we see someone who recently sold one did so for $200 shipping (yikes!)....well, we inquired at UPS and they want $700 or so!!  (that's $200 for having a crate made, and another $500 in shipping cost).....is freight really this expensive?  (Still haven't picked my chin off the floor!)  Thanks for any advice!!

Freight can be expensive.

See here: http://community.ebay.com/t5/Shipping-Returns/How-do-you-deliver-a-mattress-it-s-too-heavy/td-p/2736...

Post the weight and dimensions of the sewing machine (and a quick photo if you have it) and we can look at FedEx and UPS options just to check those numbers.

(Remember, retail rates at the counter will be approx double or triple the rate would be purchasing a label through eBay, at least for FedEx).

Freight via FedEx or UPS is outrageous. They just soak the poor unsuspecting customer. Actual freight companies are much cheaper.  I had an antique chest of drawers shipped here in Florida from South Carolina. It cost me 100 bucks.

Thank you for the replies!!  Does one put such heavy things in a box? and where does one find a box that large?  To print a label at home from Ebay you'd need it boxed up first I imagine.
