A buyer from Thailand purchased a very expensive item. The global ebay shipping program asks me to ship it to their US location first , then they take care of the rest. However, after payment was made, the buyer (via a private ebay message) requested it sent to a different address than what he put on his original order details. How can I relay this address change to ebay, or if I ignore the request and allow them to ship to the original address will I stay protected?

It's the buyer who needs to relay the address change to the GSP. Not your responsibility to do that. I would be inclined to explain to him that you can't change the address and he needed to do it before he paid, and offer to cancel. He can call the gsp or eBay customer service to see about changing the address, I know some buyers have been able to get the GSP to change the address.
