Global Shipping Program quoted about 17, but becomes 33 when I go to pay?

So I won an auction listing on a best offer and the GSP cost was listed as £17.33. It still says that on the winning page. But when I go to pay it says I have to pay £33.22.. This isn't even close to the same. I tried to write to ebay about this because it isn't the seller's fault and they just tell me:

"The listings will show an estimate. The charges you see on the listing aren't final until you pay for the item at checkout. The final cost you’ll need to pay to have your item delivered will be confirmed at checkout."

I understand that. But is doubling the shipping really ok? Is there anything I can do? Their estimate seems completely misleading.

To be clear I'm not upset about the import charges or the quoted GSP price, I knew those when I placed my offer. But £16 extra on top of a £17 quote seems a bit unreasonable.

Both are in pounds. The screenshots are attached. Any ideas as to what's going on or how I can solve it?

Screen shot 1 shows £17.33 shipping which is more than likely postage. This amount will be based on region that item is being sent to and will change according to buyer's location.

Screen shot 2 shows £33.32 and states No additional import charges at delivery.

In my experience amount of  £33.32  is made up of postage + Duty and or other charges like VAT that is paid to buyers country's authorities  + Import documentation/ handling charges.

Post £17.33

Handling £8.25 (Customs entry and other out of pocket charges occured)

Tax £7.75 ( This amount is an assumption on my part)

Total £33.33

Break down of these charges should be visible on your order details after payment is made.

Hope this helps.

@gretuc62,

The first screenshot doesn't show anything about import charges, so that is showing the cost of domestic delivery, to an address in the UK. That says "Pay now" which means you were not on the checkout page, and had not entered or chosen your shipping address yet.

Because you had not entered your actual location in Italy when you were viewing that screen, you were seeing the cost of domestic shipping, as the default. If you had entered your actual shipping address by then, you would have seen the actual costs.

In the second screenshot, you are on the checkout page, and now your address in Italy has been entered or chosen. So at that point, you were seeing the actual cost of shipping (total of domestic shipping to the GSP depot, plus the international shipping) of £33.22, and the separate cost for the import charges of £8.29.

So you mean that 8.29GBP listed under "Import charges" is included in the 33GBP? That's not how it adds up on the final total unfortunately.

Thanks to everyone for trying to help me understand! Ebay ended up getting back and basically said "tough luck, it was just an estimate and we're not going to help you". So order cancelled (with the agreement and understanding of the seller) and I'll just have to be more wary of GSP listings in the future as it seems like the estimate they quote has little to nothing to do with the actual price.

That I believe to be true:

Does cost sales for sure.

@gretuc62,

Yes, you had entered/chosen your address in the second screenshot. That's why you were seeing the actual cost of the GSP shipping and import charges at that time.

However, in the first screenshot, you had not chosen or entered your address yet. You can tell that, because it is showing the cost of domestic shipping (to a UK address) as I said before. The cost of the international shipping and the import charges were not included because you hadn't chosen your international address yet.

GSP shipping and import charges are not estimated. I have made many GSP purchases from the UK, and those costs are always available upfront, before you purchase, and they are exact to the penny.

You have to go to the Shipping and Handling tab, and choose your country from the drop-down menu. Then it will show you the actual international shipping cost, and (for fixed price listings) the import charges as well. For auctions, as long as you choose your country on the Shipping and Handling tab before you bid, then you will see the import charges on the bidding page.

That's not the same item. The first item you asked about had a purchase price of £130.00, and these screenshots show a purchase price of £117.00.

Different items, different costs.

If you share the original item number, we can check the costs.

Yes £8.29 is handling fee and is in addition to postage charges and any taxes.

Countries within EU have free movements of people goods and services so only postage charges should be applied when sales are within member states.

UK is now outside of EU therefore on all shipments through GSP eBay are now required to collect all taxes like VAT from buyers and pay these  to buyer's country.

If shipment is not through GSP then seller may be enrolled in IOSS in which case buyer in addition to item price and postage will pay all taxes like VAT to seller who will pay these to buyer's country.

If seller is NOT enrolled in IOSS then no taxes will be collected/ paid to seller and depending on item cost buyer may or will get a demand to pay relevent taxes/ VAT from their country's authorities before package is delivered and this can and does cause delays in items getting delivered.

GSP initially advised you Postage cost only and handling charges and taxes they had to collect took your total to £33.22.

I note from one of your posts that order has been cancelled.

Sorry, but no, that's not how GSP works.

OP did not see the GSP cost at first, because the listing was showing the default shipping cost (to the UK, not to OP's country). If OP had chosen their country/shipping address already, then they would have seen the exact cost of GSP shipping. That's how it works. You can find out the exact cost of GSP shipping to any country by changing the shipping location on the Shipping and payments tab.
