Getting the right shipping calculation

I don't package until paid...I simply don't have enough room or $ to prepack every item until it's sold.  So,  How can I deal with calculating the new size to weight limitations so that the eBay calculator is closer to correct.  I sold one item the other day which cost me an additional $4.89 in shipping and that wiped out almost all the profit on that particular item because I had it at a sale price.  I AM NOT Complaining just asking for someone that understands the situation that can give me a brief do and don't do reply.  Thanks folks...sorry to be a bother.   Just a general note will help..I'm not into beating on someone that tries to help even if they get it wrong.  I'd go read the regulations and try to figure it out myself but wife is fresh out of surgery and I simply can't focus right now very well.

Getting the right shipping calculation

You don't have to literally pack everything and keep it packed. You just have to know what size box you'll be using, and if it's over 1 cubic foot then the dimensions are especially important because they will determine your shipping cost. For larger items, just put them into a box, measure the box, and then take the item out.  The only extra space you need is for ONE of each size of box you use that's over 1728 cubic inches.

Even without considering dimensional weight, it's impossible to anticipate the postage cost if you don't know the weight of your final package either.

We also do not box until ready to ship.  Obviously, if the item will fit in a 12x12x12, there is no issue.  For items that will exceed one cubic foot in volume:

  1. For inexpensive items in a box shape, we use the actual dimensions ... for shipping, we wrap it in white poly.
  2. For odd-shaped items that are not in a box shape, or for more expensive items that we believe need to be double-boxed, we add 1-2 inches to each dimension.
