Getting a return notice from a buyer and not receiving your item

I want to make this thread to people so that i could share my story and maybe help others with similar problems.

I have recently sold an item and sent it off with tracking and signed, the item delivered fine and i had no problems for about a week, after a week i received an email saying the buyer wants to return the item because it didnt work. Ofcourse knowing that the item worked perfectly fine i was not happy about this as such after waiting and trying to communicate with the buyer i didnt get any response and was forced to accept the return.

After a while i received my item or so it said on the tracking but in fact i did not, the item says it has been delivered but i got nothing and i was getting very suspicious at this point, i have asked all my neighbours around and none of them had my package. After speaking with ebay several times they said that the tracking shows the item has been delivered and in turn they have refunded the buyer as such i did not receive anything back, neither the item or the refund. The item value was around £300 and now i have lost it with no way of getting it back.

I went down to my local post office to try and see maybe the item was being kept there by any chance and unfortunately they had 0 information about the item, no name, no address it was shipped to, no return nothing, i was very troubled by this and confused however one thing they did have was the item weight, this weight was significantly less around the weight of a letter, my item being several 10s of times heavier showed clear proof that what i was meant to receive was nothing of the sort as such thanks to me keeping my receipt as proof of the item weight i managed to find some foothold in this case and proof that whatever was supposedly delivered to me was in fact not my item.

I think what happed was that the buyer sent a letter which would give him tracking information to my neighbours that way it would still show that the item is in the general area and even if i asked my neighbours about the package they would decline as they didnt receive a package but maybe something like a letter by a random name that they threw out.

Currently i cannot open an appeal however the staff at ebay have issued a request for me to be refunded and i am unsure how this will turn out but hopefully this goes in my favour and i get my money back for the item.

I hope this has in some way helped others with similar problems or at least bring light to this sort of scam and the possibility of it.
