Frustation at Inconsistency in Shipping Costs as Buyer

Is anyone else frustrated with the flexibility and "honesty" system of shipping costs? That it seems an easy loop hole for some (not all, but in my case its been many) sellers to overcharge (which isn't that mail fraud?) and no consiquences other than ratings? And sellers don't have to show the postage paid. I've had numerous occasions where I've been charged one amount and the shipping shown on the postage paid from the post office was vastly less than I was charged. Then when I've contacted sellers I was told there was a handling fee for supplies and the package had arrived wrapped with a brown paper grocery bag. I feel eBay needs a better way to monitor this because in many instances I feel taken advantage of as a buyer.

Ummmm think about your statement... "it doesn’t universally cover damage" and then you follow it with why sellers fail to get reimbursed.

Properly package your items and it will protect you against loss. I have never had a claim denied in over 25 years of shipping. The only company that ever tried was UPS and they eventually paid up.

I find it a worry, that people can charge 30+ dollars for shipping  for such a small item. people on ebay seam to up their posting costs to make even more money or profits as i call them. it's disgusting how they can get away with it...

Why does it matter?  Really why?  If you don't like the amount a seller is charging for the product or for the shipping or any combination, move on.  Don't purchase from them.  If you don't like the price, it is simple, don't purchase.

 

Sellers that may do this kind of thing will learn that it doesn't work if buyers just don't buy, PERIOD.

 

BUT if the buyer does decide to purchase the item, they then do not suddenly get the right to complain about the shipping amount and expect the seller to change it.  Nor should they hurt the seller's FB in ANY way.  It is just simple logic.  If you don't approve of or agree with the pricing, DON'T BUY IT.

I am a pretty large seller. I answer to shipping costs is if my buyer over pays the cost of shipping by .75 cents I refund them the excess.

My postal bill so far this year is about $50000.00 and the total refunds I have sent are about $9000.00 

It's my policy to do this as it earns repeat business. I am different from some seller's as I sell new items that I reorder on a regular basis. I know my model will not work for everyone but I feel it has served me well.

I think that is completely different than what this OP is complaining about.  The OP does not recognize any cost to shipping beyond the literal cost to the carrier.  That of course is not the entire picture.  While some sellers roll that cost into the price of the product, others roll it into the price of shipping.  Both are correct methods.  Either way is an acceptable accounting method.  It is just up to the seller to decide on their own which is best for them and what they sell.

 

There are always sellers that say they don't charge anything for shipping beyond the literal cost of the carrier services, but that simply isn't true.  They either add it to the price of the product or they take a loss on every item they sell.  Again, their choice, but the cost will be covered whether the buyer and/or the seller understand it is a different subject all together.  

 

I too refund buyer that I know have overpaid for shipping.  If I have a buyer that pays for items purchased and in my review of the payment I see that the S&H should be less, I don't wait for a buyer to say a thing.  I send them an email outlining what I see and what I'm going to do.  Then I go to PP and issue the appropriate refunds.  Most of the time I hear nothing from these buyers.  It is very rare for any of them to even say thank you.  But I still do it and will continue to do so as I see it as the appropriate thing to do.

Honesty runs both ways!

How many times have buyers refunded sellers when they have been UNDERCHARGED on shipping costs?

I know in all of my years of selling on Ebay, I have only ever had ONE buyer refund me the difference when they noticed that I had undercharged them for shipping. He took it upon himself to send me the refund as I never ask customers to make up for my shipping undercharges. And there have been several doozies, too!

I've had that happen a couple of times and USPS paid me the amount they were insured for minus shipping of course.

As a small time seller I don't have the jar to toss a quarter in per sale to "self insure".

 

 


a refund on a claim for a "lost" item is supposed to include the postage as well.

 

for damaged items, only the proven value of the item.

I guess I'd be one of those buyers, too, except for the fact that I won't pay inflated shipping & handling charges.

I won't complain about it, I just don't bid. A seller can justify every penny he / she overcharges. Shoe leather

used for the walk from the car to the shipping counter. The crumpled up paper used for packing. "Sharpie" 

ink used to blot out printing on the used box. 

 

Two fellows from New York shipping the same new, sealed item, one charging 8.95 while the other charges

14.90. Pretty wild discrepency and one I simply won't entertain. I've just learned to live without things that

greedy people want to pick my pocket for.

Most sellers are not that petty.  Of course there will be some along the way, but most are not like that.  It is much like along the way there will be buyers that don't think it is important for sellers to be able to recover their real costs much less make any kind of profit on the product, not shipping.

We just purchased two items from same seller who advertized the shipping would be  $6.00 on each auction.  So he ships them together and only pays $3.50 as seen on the package.  Is this FAIR??

Are you assuming it cost them $3.50 to ship them together or you know the weight of the items after packaging and calculated the shipping yourself?  What type of  items are these items?

 

As a buyer, if you didn't like the fact they charge $6 for shipping, you have every right not to purchase from that seller and move onto the next.  However if you decide you really want the item and purchase it, complaining after the fact is not at all fair to the seller.  If  you don't like the price of shipping, simply don't purchase from them.

It could be quite fair if the items were priced at or below cost.

The package had official Post Office $3.50 PAID STICKER ATTACHED TO BOX.  The box contained both pennants that were purchased separately.  The box weighed less than a pound.  Short story is that we paid him $8.50 for his packaging and handling and $3.50 for the actual shipping.  Granted his auction plainly declared that the shipping would be $6.00 for each auction purchased.  Bottom line he charged us $12.00 for an actual fee of $3.50.

You apparently knew all that going in, so why did you buy from that seller?
