For selling an inexpensive item such as postcard or a ring, could I use a small padded envelope, send the item first class and pay the shipping myself? Is that allowed? It would be a lot less expensive.

Yes, you can do that, but without tracking you lose and not received dispute. For the postcards you can use the low cost ebay Standard Envelope.

A padded envelope probably would be too thick for first class large envelope.

Yes, but a mylar envelope wouldn't be and even with bubble wrap inside it is practically weightless.

If it is a cheap item, I wouldn't worry too much about refunding somebody who complained.

How do I choose the EBay Standard Envelope? I haven't seen it as an option.

If you are putting bubble wrap inside it it's going to become to thick. Being weightless won't matter if it's too thick. I generally use bubble wrap to make small things thick enough to mail first class package. Of course all this will change next month too.

Follow the instructions in the link I posted. You also must use a specific type of envelopes to qualify.
