Fedex Shipping Overcharge? What to do

Shipped a doll via Fedex. Estimated charge for shipping was $24.49. Package weighed about 3 1/2 lbs. and measured about 25 x 9 x 9. On invoice found that I was charged $40.49 to ship the package even though the shipping charge breakdown only added up to $24.49. Called ebay. They opened a dispute with Fedex but called back and said that Fedex wouldn't budge basically, something about dimensional weight. The billing weight was 12 lbs.

They told me I could call Fedex directly and explain. Any experience on this and what is best to do? If I lose the $15, it's okay, I just don't want to give up too fast.

I called Fedex and didn't get anywhere there as I hadn't printed the label through my account with them. So called ebay again and found out that the case has been escalated and is still open. Apparently, they are trying to resolve the issue in my favor - Lord willing!

@gal220joy

All shippers have dimensional weight and you are charged the GREATER of the actual weight or the dimensional weight.  For USPS dimensional weight only applies to items greater than 1 cu ft or 1728 cu inches.

The formula for FedEx is l x w x d / 166  which for your package is 25 x 9 x 9 / 166 = 12.2, so your item ships at 12.2lbs, NOT 3.5lbs. Unfortunately this is a moderately expensive lesson in shipping cost calculations.

It's extremely important that you accurately enter the size of the shipping container on any item over 1lb or eBay will not correctly charge the buyer.

And... why doesn't the eBay calculator figure it for you properly, if they know this will happen? I shipped a doll and chose FedEx Smartpost (meant to choose FE Home Del). Listed at $34.35, Buyer paid $41.93 and I paid $48.24!! I will NEVER use FedEx for ANYTHING again. During COVID, I cannot call eBay and cannot find a way to email for this issue either. Thanks eBay! Great way to support the Seller! If I knew this, I would have just shipped USPS and charged more $ to Buyer. Gee. Live and learn, eh? Oh... and... my doll/package has been LOST for two weeks in the USPS mail. So FedEx hands off to USPS and takes NO responsibility for the pkg at all. FYI add 92 to the beginning of your FedEx SmartPost tracking to see it when it enters USPS system. Wish FedEx knew that and would have told me!
