FedEx is way over charging vs ebay actual shipping cost

I noticed in December I had several packages that were almost double if not more the usual cost.  When label was created using the actual size and weight, and know one was 24x5x5 and 12 lbs, ebay actual fedex shipping cost $15.37 and FedEx billed account for $37, I found this on 6 different items on my December invoice.  Anybody know why?

One possibility is in how you are packaging the items.  FedEx has surcharges if you do not package properly, or if you exceed dimensions ... these are not necessarily accounted for in the eBay postage calculator.

Without knowing details, it would be hard to guess.  You just need to become better versed in the surcharges.

One surcharge example is the $12 "Additional Handling Amount" which is incurred if your package does not meet FedEx guidelines for automated equipment handling ... some examples:

  • The longest dimension is over 48" or the second longest dimension is over 30".
  • The item is not fully encased - e.g., there are holes in the packaging.
  • The package is not in a cardboard box ... e.g., it is plastic, wood, foam, leather, etc.
  • The package is wrapped in shrink wrap or stretch wrap.
  • If the largest dimension is over 18" and the package is wrapped in a soft cover such as poly plastic, or bubble mailer material ... I think I recall someone writing that brown kraft paper might also be considered "soft cover".   Regardless, best practice is for the exterior to be a cardboard box.
  • The packaging has anything that might get entangled in automated machinery, or cause damage to other packages ... metal bands, duct tape, protruding handles, loose wrapping,
  • The package is cylindrical.
