I just had a horrible experience with fake tracking number. Ebay really needs to figure a way to better prevent this. The seller provided a tracking number to eBay, but I never received the item. I called UPS and provided my shipping address and UPS said that that the tracking number doesn't match the shipping address. I tried to contact the seller and eBay responded that the seller provided a tracking number to my address. I repeatedly email the seller indicating that the tracking number they provided to eBay doesn't match my address as confirmed by UPS. Also, UPS tracking site showed that it was received and signed by someone else other that me or my family. I'm guessing the the bogus seller sent my paid item to someone they know to obtain the tracking number and then provide a fake number to me to satisfy eBay requirement to complete a transaction. After 3 days, I asked eBay to step in, they closed the case against me and in favor of the seller since the seller provided a tracking number. What the heck eBay, didn't you even bother to read emails that I sent and got no reply from the vendor? I had to call eBay and got the run around, but it was finally resolved in my favor. I had 2 bad experiences in one week so I'm thinking twice about future transaction on eBay.

The tracking number scam is a BIG problem.

Correct. They likely did not read emails, or anything else.
Probably all done by "bots".
You will need to appeal that decision to get "human eyes" on the case to see/prove that the tracking was not to your address.

Next time: keep it cool. Rely on the possibility to appeal. Just what you did with eBay on the phone.
That's how it works.

@alaen15 the resolution center is run by computer bots. On an item not received case, the bots look for tracking showing delivery to your zip code. You needed to call eBay rather than use the link to ask them to step in. I’m glad you were able to successfully appeal.
