So non-repeat customer purchased an item for 11 dollars with free shipping. They also ordered another one from a different seller apparently. I shipped the item in a box , the buyer requested return under our free return policy and actually did the right thing picking "ordered by mistake" not ideal but it happens and I'm usually one to reward honesty.
They shipped it back though in an envelope (it was shipped out well packed in a box) : more than that it's not actually my product it's identical in every way save for the lot number. This was clearly the other sellers product (the lot number is the giveaway) none the less the product was damaged in return shipping since it went out in an envelope.
Now I generally suspect that the buyer is basically honest from conversation and did order 2 by mistake, but I suspect she kept the one in better condition (ours) but returned us the other seller's item in their packaging because our price was a dollar or a dollar and a half higher (good shipping costs).
I'm aware there is a lot I "could do" since its definitely not my product which was shipped back on the other hand anything adverse is likely to lead to them having hurt feelings/negative review/general unhappiness and I'm not sure its worth it for an 11 dollar item : even 18 with shipping out and shipping back in for the return.
Open to opinions on this.

Obviously none of us can guarantee what any particular customer service rep will do, and there are some who will say you will automatically get screwed.
But I have hope to offer.
I had a similar case about a year ago. The buyer sent back something entirely different than what I sent. I documented it with photos and contacted eBay. They agreed that the buyer abused the system. I did not have to refund and their feedback was removed.
It's not the money - it's the principle. If you don't stand up they will do it to others. And if others do not stand up they will do it you (again).

I would first contact the buyer and tell her that she accidentally sent the wrong item back to you.
