Ebay forcing Sellers to accept all returns!

Very upsetting when eBay is not only forcing us sellers to offer a 30 day return on all items, they now automatically process return approvals.  I don't need them running my store or driving my policies.  

 

I sold a brand new DVD set oop with retail value of $99.  The person opened this brand new dvd set...all the cases,  and is claiming it doesn't work.  Ebay approved their return automatically & instantaly ...this DVD has little value as a now used item.

 

This is on the heels of another return that Ebay approved automatically and instantly which came back smelling of Smoke!!! This was a new clothing item.  I received the item, and was going to contact Ebay, when the very NEXT DAY AFTER I RECEIVED IT THEY REFUNDED THE FULL AMOUNT TO THE BUYER!  I cannot sell this item.

 

So my resolve is to check off doesn't accept returns, then add the return details within my listng.  The listing is part of the sale agreement so I again have control over my store and my policies.

 

I did call Ebay, they explained that if they refunded every return that decreased the value of the items that sellers are selling it wouldn't be a good business practice on their part...profit wise.  REALLY?!  So you're ridding on the backs of your sellers and rolling over for all buyers.  

 

Sad.  We're just a small nonprofit the helps the poor in our community, so our voice means nothing.  But all our voices together may have some impact.  

 

I'm not new to eBay, 14 years in with over 1000 positive feedback. This is a small nonprofit that I'm helping, so this account is only a few months old.

 I'm sorry to tell you but, yes eBay's policies do override your policies, every time.

 

eBay enforces their policies automatically in many cases, as you have found out. If you accept returns, then you accept all returns. The only thing that differs is who pays for the return shipping, which is based on your policy, as long as the buyer chooses a reason for the return that is not related to seller error. In that case, the seller always for the return shipping.

 

This is for your information. I think it is better to clearly understand what business policies you have to deal with, and no matter how reasonable you think your policies are, if they are in conflict with eBay's policies then eBay will enforce their own policies, in violation of yours.  So it is better to know this and build your business model accordingly.

 

You can't compare selling on eBay to a B&M store ... at a B&M store, the buyer is there, and can pick up the item, examine it, and make their judgements about the description and condition. When buying online, the buyer has to depend on the seller to describe the item accurately and completely. This is why eBay always gives the buyer the benefit of the doubt, unless the buyer has a documented track record of unfair Money Back Guarantee (MBG) cases.

A no returns policy won’t stop you from issuing refunds. It will stop automatic return approval but you will still be refunding buyers who return items that smell of smoke

They didn't override my policy.  They shouldn't approve returns on behalf of sellers. This was same day, and automatically.   If a seller leaves a buyer hanging eBay should step in. 

A brick and mortar wouldn't have accepted these returns. 

I've maintained 100% positive feedback being I'm super reasonable. Never had issues until Ebay changed their policy and started steering the ship. It's not fair that I'm selling top items for low prices, and if there is a return I get them back unsellable...and I don't have a leg to stand on. 

Do you feel this is fair?

I want to have a return policy...and do. I don't want ebay accepting returns prior to my contact with the buyer. 

 

We don't mind returns, we do mind when we get them back damaged, or not in new condition as sold and Ebay auto refunds next day after item is shown delivered on tracking. 

 

When the refund is issued automatically we get stuck with an item we can't sell. That's just not fair to the seller. We are super reasonable, but we shouldn't be pushed to place of filing complaints and claims with ebay to recover. Its Time consuming and stressful.

I know that you didn't ask for advice about your listings, but I have some unsolicited advice for you.  Use the characters in your titles for words that buyers will actually search.  They probably won't search for words like cool in this hot summer weather, but they will search for Stella McCartney, not McCarthy.   Your silver tone purse should have the word purse or bag in the title.

Sorry, but I just don't agree, with respect.   Both Best Buy and Walmart do not accept open DVD's on return.

Example: Walmart's return policy is:

Tools of outside use, such as lawn mowers or power washers, must be returned within 30 days with a receipt. CDs, DVDs, and video game cartridges follow the 90-day return policy, but must be either defective or returned unopened for a refund or exchange.

This is sort of getting off topic.

Not to be disresptful, but you don't appear to be a seller or have no items listed...so I'm not sure if you understand my frustration here.

Isn't that the industry standard that ebay tells us sellers that we asked for?  No it is ebay's phony industry  standard.     Far as the DVD set  goes  the buyer  didn't need to  open all of set up , if any thing  do to age of DVD's they would  worked on  the buyers  PCP or laptop disc drive  not the  dvd player .

eBay has decided that they want consistent return policies between sellers, so they've begun standardizing all of our return policies.  If you place language in your listing that is in conflict with eBay's standards (e.g. 14-day returns, or 5% restocking fee) then it is unenforceable because the eBay policies supercede yours.

 

I think the auto returns were put in place to prevent sellers from battling customers, as the sellers now complain directly to eBay ... probably a good idea, actually, because eBay will require you to refund and/or take back these purchases anyway.  One thing you can do to disrupt the automatic return approval is to require an RMA number with the return ... this might give a seller an opportunity to work something out with the buyer.

Ebay has forced me to accept "FreeReturns" in order to keep my "Top Rated Seller Plus" status. I recently sold 15 LED outside flood lamps to California with Free Shipping/Free Returns. The 15 lamps were brand new in Original box. The buyer said they didn't fit. The bulbs were described very well. The buyer was automatically granted a Free return. I have now paid $35 for the free shipping to get them to CA. I would like to know who is going to pay the Free Returns back to Ohio and how this Free Returns works. I have been selling on Ebay for 14 years with 100% Feedback. If the seller has to pay this return charge i am out $70 in shipping and the box is now opened making the items "used" and i cannot sell them  as "new". Can anyone put a prespective on this matter?

You should have done the math before you chose to offer free returns. Saving 10% off your FVFs doesn’t offset the cost of free returns for most sellers here. All it takes is 1-2 returns and you’ve spent more on return shipping then you saved in fees.

When I see listings with all kinds of terms that cannot be enforced, I just shake my head. The only people your terms will work on are buyers who do not know how the site works, and are either totally or partially blind because they don't see the MBG logo on listings, and they actually let sellers get away with refusing returns when they have a legitimate claim.
