Do not understand why a buyer would return a low dollar item for a small refund

I sold a jewelry pin for $6.95 and $1.00 shipping.  (Yes, $1.00 did not cover the ship charge.)

The buyer has the pin for 3 weeks and decides to return it.  Reason:  didn't fit, pin was not wide enough.

I have a 60 day return policy but buyer pays return postage.

To send this pin back to me cost the buyer around $3.00 and the refund issued was $6.95 (buyer does not get back the $1.00 ship charge.)

What I do not understand is why anyone would send back a pin that cost them $7.95 and get a net refund of  about 3.95.  ($7.95-$1 to ship to them-$3 to ship back.)

Yes, the buyer could have said SNAD and got the return postage and $7.95, so at least that did not happen.  And the pin came back in good shape.  But it is  hard for me to understand why the buyer bothered unless they just expected me to just issue a refund without a return.

Any thoughts?

Buyer probably expected a full refund of everything they initially paid. Now you get to worry about possible feedback.

Buyer had already left positive feedback at least a week before requesting the return.

I know that sometimes it is a hard concept to digest but some buyers are honest.     They didn't want to keep the pin and least they got some money back.

Buyer could have been a older person/senior citizen and honestly, quite ok with the 3.95 back. Buyer may have just "rented" the item from you for a function.

One just never knows what goes through the head of buyers sometimes...lol

Cheers

Exactly.

If you decide you don't want something, anything back is better than nothing.

Buyers do some of the strangest things sometimes.  It is hard to figure out why.  I just had a buyer return a $10 item at their expense and they shipped it via FedEx.  I have no idea why, they could have used USPS for about $3.  But they chose Fedex.  I'm thinking they aren't netting out much of a refund.  LOL

I had a guy from Canada, English was not his 1st language, that bought a train car...he wanted a different scale...I think he assumed I had a retail B&M hobby store or something, so he started a SNAD even though it was as described.

This was back when ebay policy mattered. I call it in and CSR said all I had to refund was the original item cost minus the 20% restock fee.

Told the guy that he could return it but his refund would be zero, he didn't believe me.

Shipping two ways on a fake SNAD minus the re-stocking fee meant he owed me about 65 cents.

Left negative feedback, I had it removed in 5 minutes.

....again this is back when ebay had rules and policies.

That has nothing to do with the OP.

The buyer paid return shipping for an item the OP had a 60 return policy on.

The Op accepts returns. That's all that matters.

It has everything to do with the OP.

Buyers do not pay attention.  They are fickle and dumb and don't realize what a return costs them.

That's what we're talking about here. Your post on the other hand...

Bottom line of the Op has a return policy, every thing else is moot.

I accepted a return once even though I've always had no returns I really didn't expect the buyer to follow through because in the end the returned and still were out $2 and had nothing for it.  That one I really didn't get.  Why would you return something and be out money to have nothing

Wow, so when you're a buyer on any site would you like to be called fickle and dumb?

They didn't want it and wanted their money back, even if it wasn't much money.  Four dollars is four dollars.

They did send it back.  If they just wanted a refund, they might not have sent it back.
