Customer can return a different item than what they bought

FYI -Customer bought a new old stock clock for their car , after a month, they said their mechanic said it lights but doesn't work. We said, return it and sent a label. Customer returned a different brand clock that was USED. We contacted customer with photos and never got a reply. We contacted Ebay who said they were closing the case in our favor and didn't do anything.
Long story short, we didn't refund the customer, customer escalated the case and got all their money back and our new clock. Ebay said, we have no record of you calling us- we have proof on our cell phone, and we don't know what you sent them. My rebuttal was customer never said we sent the wrong item or a used item. That should of told them something. Customer never contacted us after we sent them photos of what they returned. That should of told them something more.
They basically told us too bad, opt into 30 day returns (we have 14) and you can charge customers up to 50% of the refund if they return something not as shipped. Okay, so you lose 50% right off the bat.
Long time Ebay sellers and buyers (since 1998). Disappointed in this non service for us. Will be cutting back on our ebay listings instead of the planned expansion for this year.

Sounds like ebay owes you the money, like any corporation. it may take awhile for them to realize their mistake and cover your cost, it may take a long time and some more phone calls, tell us, did you officially report that the customer sent back other than sold to them, through the report link? just saying, they should take your word if you post pictures of what was sent back to you, good luck to you, you seem like a long time seller so you should have no problem, yet you are having a big one here.

haha that wont work.......All they have to say is the product was broken and not as expected.  Listed 10 phones.  Listed all as broken screens, locked, not working and even listed all serial #s so they could look them up, listed them as junk, as is not accepting returns.  Complete and full discloser in 7 places on my listing I hit all the points.

Was a 500.00 sale.  I even called Ebay before I listed to see if bases were covered.  DID NOT MATTER.  Buyer made a claim, I fought it, Ebay gave me a ding for, gave them the money back, told the seller to return, when I finally got it back over a month later, full of trash.  Inside to phone were destroyed and removed. EBAY says sorry, nothing we can do.

If you are a seller her you have no protections against thievery, fraud, or abuse.

Re: Customer can return a different item than what they bought

this is a bot response, I have 10 phones listed, and I challenge anyone to try to do that to me, truth is, ebay and buyers have never ripped me off in 5 years, won six cases, have a five star rating. When calling ebay it is better to be nice to the person on the other end, if you say you want to talk to a supervisor that helps. Saying that wont work, means it wont work for you, not me or the op, just you.

Re: Customer can return a different item than what they bought

Had the same thing happen to me. Returned an item all cut apart with scissors. They were given full refund and I got a mark on my file for an escalated case... that I escalated with photos and all the documentation. incidentally that buyer didn't respond at all and sent item 28 days later.

Re: Customer can return a different item than what they bought

Sir, I beg to differ this is not a bot response.

This happened and if I did not have such a little amount invested, I would have left.  This put me into punishment buy ebay where they knocked me down to only allowing 100 items to sell and put a 1000.00 cap on listing, I am sure you know what I am talking about.

I really seriously considered leaving at that time, but we have another store that my wife operates on here and Amazon so I kept my store going as well.

Now you can say what you want, but you will see others on here have had the same issues.  Your turn is comming if it has not already.

Maybe you choose to bend over before you get the defect, I don't know.  But what I have told you is true.

It was over a year ago so you can't look up the feed back and response.

"I say ebay is an honest company, and they dont rip people off, if you got ripped off, its your own fault, not ebay."

Rough, I never said Ebay was dishonest, what I am saying is in Ebays quest to be like other selling platforms, they have made the atmosphere on Ebay one that encourages theft, and lies.

When Ebay started it was more of a protect yourself atmosphere.  I am glad that Ebay makes the seller stand behind what they sell.   Keeps bad sellers away.  However they have gone too far the other way.  They allow buyers too many liberties which encourages theft and deceipt.  Have it happen all the time.

If they want to be like Amazon then at least have a customer service department like Amazon.  Amazon, while requires returns, stands up for the sellers when there is an issue with a damaged or unfair return to the seller.  They have shipping rules that are adhered to and the sellers do not bear all the cost of a buyer that is a little overzealous about their product.

If Ebay wants to force returns like Amazon then do so.  However to make a return, the ownus should fall on the buyer to prove the item(s) were not as described.  Some of the items on Ebay are hard to classify as returnable as well.  Don't give the seller the option to not accept returns and then tell they buyer, well if you just say not as described we will force they seller to take it back no matter what the condition or problem is.

You see Rough, this used to be a platform to come and sell second hand items.......yes sort of like a flea market.  Truth be told that is what made Ebay the great selling platform it is today.  I could always come here as a buyer and seller and find anything, the unusuall, one of a kind, old stock, new stock, lost forever items, ect.  I would use Ebay as a pricing tool.  Ebay sets and has set the price for a lot of brick and mortar stores as well.  Thats POWER.  To change the face of retail the Ebay has done.  Like it or not things change, but Ebay has failed to make their change work.  Ebay should provide the platform, give fair access to this platform, moniter and moderate this platform and provide a safe and secure platform for all users involved.
