A buyer is returning a large heavy item. I sent the package with FedEx Ground. When I approved the return and had ebay provide a return label, the cost for the return label stated was exactly what I paid to send the package with FedEx. However the return label provided is with USPS. The cost to send this package with USPS would be more than double what FedEx cost. Am I really going to be charged the FedEx rate that was stated if the return label is with USPS? Earlier this year I had a similar large heavy item returned, and the return label was through FedEx.

You are probably going to be charged the USPS rate.
In your return settings, there is an RMA option. If this used, it stalls the return and offers you a chance to provide your own return label rather than an eBay generated label.

If the original shipping label was purchased from eBay, the seller will be billed that same amount if the return label is also issued by eBay.
eBay pays a flat rate, an average price for every USPS Return Service label, whether it weighs 1 ounce or 70 pounds (the limit) and measures under 108 inches, as long as eBay can drum up the contracted minimum number of 10,000/50,000/whatever returns per year.
So it won't matter that that large heavy item would ordinarily cost more at USPS than FedEx, as it ships USPS Return Service at the same average price, and then eBay turns about to bill the seller an arbitrary amount.

That is good to know.
I have heard otherwise from sellers in the past that the USPS return charge was much higher than the UPS or FedEx original shipping charge.
Would be interesting to know for sure what the OP gets charged. @yahoo57

I thought that I had read a while ago that ebay was sending return labels through Fedex now rather than usps. I wonder if they changed their minds about that.

I was charged the FedEx rate that was stated in the return, though the return label was for Priority Mail Return Service. It appears that the return shipping label cost that ebay charges is equal to what you paid to send the package if you purchased the shipping label through ebay (not the cost in the listing).

That is good to know. I use the RMA option so it allows me to pick and choose what to send. Today I had a return on a item sent USPS small flat rate box.
I could click on have eBay provide a return label, or provide my own return label or could select, label already sent.
I could click on Have eBay Provide a Label and it showed USPS $8.10 which was what I paid to begin with.
It also allowed me to change the choice if I wanted to do that after seeing what the eBay provided label would cost.
I went ahead and used the eBay label.
