Confirmed picked up but not shipped

USPS picked up a package from me in the morning.  Alter I received an email from USPS saying

Thank you for using USPS.com. We have successfully completed your Package Pickup.

However, tracking does not show it picked up yet.  I did see it scanned.

I switched to three day handling to allow time for things like this.

Good idea...I walked into the post office yesterday and saw like 30+ packages...some with that expensive

e-Bay tape on them...just sitting on the counter...only 2 clerks and sometimes both clerks might be in the back looking for something.

So easy to grab a few packages and sing 'skip-to-my-lu'.

And wouldn't you think the 'eBay tape' might draw someone to steal a package at post office or even on a porch?

I agree. I always feel like an eBay brand box is more likely to get stolen.

We don't have package pick up even though it's advertised.

By the way, it's the end of the quarter if anyone buys eBay supplies.

Guess I will go for the eBay box as I see the ads for all that great used stuff on TV.

Fortunately, my local PO is only a short walk away and is seldom very busy, so I always get a receipt when I drop off my packages. The receipt is printed automatically when the package is scanned in, so not only do I know that it's been scanned but I have printed proof. These receipts show the tracking number, delivery city, and item weight, useful if there's any unexpected charges for under paid labels. I know that for many, this isn't a viable option, but I suggest that anyone delivering their packages to the PO in person get the receipt.

I don't use USPS Pick-Up, I suspect that for at least some of them the USPS Internal System not the pick-up but the first public scan you will see is at the local regional facility. When that would happen depends on when the postal vehicle gets back to the facility and how busy they are at that time.

The email saying "We have successfully completed your package pickup" doesn't really mean much, I think they have a sheet with a list of pickups and they scan it when they pickup the package or they're supposed to. I've gotten that email a handful of times then when I checked my mailbox the package was still there.

I seem to have a good mailman right now that always scans the package when he gets back to his truck. I also have about five different post offices around me that I use. One bigger one that I just drop off the packages at the drop off area on the counter and they have never failed to scan any of them. The rest are smaller and there is never a line, just walk in and hand it to them, say no receipt and leave, they always get scanned also.

I noticed that packages picked up from my home are not scanned immediately. In fact sometimes they are not scanned in for a day or two. I have started to put this note on my listings:

Your purchase was picked up from my home by the USPS today.  However, all mail/packages are delayed due to post office consolidation.  Packages I brought to the post office 4 days ago, and had them scanned in at that time seem to still be sitting at my local post office, according to the tracking number.

Small packages sent from my mailbox have been picked up the next day but not scanned in, so tracking numbers don’t show it’s even been picked up. My local PO no longer sorts and delivers from that office. Only counter service for stamps and package drop off. All mail for our town will be sent to a facility ½ hour away and scanned when they receive it. Tracking is not shown until they scan it in at the new facility.

It is also unclear if those packages brought to our local post office are picked up from there daily and brought to the new facility. When they actually get to the new facility is a mystery.  Which then makes it impossible to track packages for at least a few days.  

I am sorry for this delay but wanted to let you know what is happening. I pride myself on timely delivery but this situation may make that impossible at least until the post office works out the bugs in this new system.
