I don't often ship items subject to dimensional weight. Does the Ebay shipping calculator figure the shipping costs based on the dimensional weight rate if applicable? I searched previous posts and some say yes, and some say no and put in the dimensional weight yourself. I am shipping a package Fedex Ground with an actual weight of 12 lb and 32x15x11. The dimensional weight per the Fedex website is 38 lb. The Ebay shipping calculator comes up with an Ebay rate for Fedex Ground about $5 higher for the 38lb. as opposed to the 12 lb. so I ended up putting the higher weight into the calculator for the listing. Just looking to clarify for future listings. Thanks!

My experience has been ALL FedEx packages are calculated by dimensional weight more so than actual weight. You can confirm this yourself.
Next time you have a FedEx package, put in a package with any weight (say 3 pounds) and list the size as 6x6x6, then change it to 8x8x8 then change it to 12x12x12. Even though the weight remains the same you will see that the cost to ship increases as the size of the package increase. Also note that all of the examples I have given are UNDER one cubic foot. So for USPS the coast would remain the same.
In the example you gave the shipping was based on 32x15x11 not the weight. The ACTUAL weight is pretty much irrelevant. Make sure the SIZE is accurate to avoid any surprise upcharges.

The smaller the package is better for price, b/c that gives the mail trucks more room. That is what I gathered last year when we needed to put in the dimensions. It used to be all about the weight, now its the size and what zone.

Not sure, but ALWAYS be careful wit FedEx and UPS shipments. They use cubers to check every box and you will get charged. USPS is more lenient. Unless your box is obviously light for it's size, you're usually fine.
