Changes Coming to USPS this Tuesday August 1st.

Hi All,

Just thought I'd post a link to an article about the USPS stating they will begin to verify postage purchased online Tuesday, August 1st., to see if it matches the weight of the parcel. My Post Master warned me this was coming two years ago as the USPS did a survey of parcels going through their system and found that approximately 30% were under weight as to postage purchased online:

There are several in my post office that already target my packages.    I am not their favorite because we have had a few disagreements ,  like flat rate does not necessarily mean flat packages....

They pull a few out and put them aside to weigh.     Sadly this  means that some get delayed,  returned  a few days later and even lost.    I had 8 packages returned about a month ago because they were 1 ounce underweight.     I took them back and asked them to weigh them.    Low and Behold,  I was correct.    I told them to than put a pencil on the scale and voila,  the problem.

The issue is not "under weight" packages -- it is short-paid postage or mismatched class of mail vs. packaging.

If your package weighs 2 lbs. 4 oz., it's OK to call it 3 lbs. because you'll pay for 3 lbs. either way.

The good news is that if you pay too much -- e.g., package weighs 3 lbs., you pay for 4 lbs. -- you'll get a refund of the excess postage.

When I drop off a package at the Post Office, they always weigh it. Those that were merely dropped in their drop-off box, a few of those items were returned for insufficient postage. The envelope was one half inch larger or some other technicality.
