Hi Fellow Ebayers,
I sold a set of china to a customer in Juneau, Alaska. I had designated Calculated Shipping when listed. I believe buyer paid $29.00 but shipping was $54.00. Am I doing something wrong? I tried calling ebay and couldn't get anyone. Just tells me to go online. I of course ate the cost because i wasn't going to ask the buyer to pay more than what the listing quoted her. Hoping someone with more ebay experience can help me so I don't keep making the same expensive mistake.
Thank you for taking time to read... hopefully you can help.
Best wishes,
Teresa

I agree with the other post: I suspect that when you set up your shipping calculator, you didn't enter accurate package dimensions, And then after safely packing it, you ended up with a box that was over 1 cubic foot so you encountered the dreaded "dimensional weight".

When you listed the item, you had the option to enter the weight and size of the box. If you didn't enter those correctly when you first listed the item, the cost would be off. Sorry this happened to you.

@dreamyvintageandcollectibles
Do you prepackage the items so you have the weight and dimensions to put in the listing?

If you do it right you won't be paying a penny. You have to make the right choices in the listing. Make sure you have calculated shipping picked as the option from the first drop down menu. In the package section make sure you have package or large package selected. For the dimensions make sure you use a tape measure to measure all 3 sides of the box and lastly use a scale to weight the item and add weight for packing materials if needed.
Good luck having a whole china service arrive unbroken. Make sure to double box and add extra packing materials. You might want to consider selling it in smaller more shippable batches.

You should be able to get back into the listing for the set that went to Alaska - elect sell similar from your sold orders. That way you can check and see exactly how you had the shipping set up. It will be easier to learn from your mistakes if you can see them. Obviously don't complete the listing, it will remain in 'drafts' that you can delete.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help. I appreciate the advice and will use it! I did pre-weigh but I don't think I listed the correct deminsions of the box at the time. I thought the whole problem was the fact that it went to Alaska and thus was more expensive. I will pay more attention to packing details. I do use the floating box method and go overboard with bubble wrap... nothing broken yet, knock on wood! I enjoy packing. Ebay has been a positive experience so far.
Thanks again.
