A buyer bought something Friday, and now (Sunday) I got a message that a return had been automatically approved/started. The reason for their return was they bought the wrong item, or something. They have a 0 feedback, so I'm assuming they are a new eBay buyer.
Ebay is wanting me to confirm my return address, so the buyer can pay for a return shipping label.
I messaged the buyer and told them NOT to pay for a return label, because I have not even shipped the item yet.
It would have been easier to cancel, but I'm guessing they don't know that. There is a link (on the message where eBay wants me to confirm my return shipping address) that says "If you prefer, you can refund the buyer now." When I click that, it doesn't show them getting their sales tax back that they paid. Just the item price (item had free shipping). I think when I have cancelled sales (not a return/refund, but a cancel) it shows the tax they paid, and they get their tax back also.
Am I remembering that correctly? If it's done as a return/refund instead of a cancellation, do they not get sales tax returned? Or is it just not showing me that? They paid $2.XX in tax.
Can the buyer close a return and do a cancellation instead? (If they can, is it easy enough to do for a new buyer, if I talk them through it?)
What's the easiest way to handle this, and see to it that they get their full amount back?

Pretty sure that eBay will refund the sales tax since it went directly to them and not you.

Just refund through the case and Ebay will take care of the sales tax.

Thanks! Once I went through and actually refunded, it showed amound refunded, and then said in small print: "eBay will refund the applicable tax back to the buyer."
