Hi,
I sold my used lens on eBay.
The buyer complained that I didn’t include a lens hood which normally comes with the retail version when bought new.
But the thing is, I listed exactly what was included in the sale with pictures and nowhere did it say it included the lens hood.
Now the Buyer is asking for a return under my cost, because I should said that a lens hood was NOT included.
I did set the listing to Returns accepts (buyer pays), but I wasn’t expecting for him to blame me because he didn’t read the listing properly.
I decided to accept to pay return postage without any quibbling because 1. I’m scared of negative feedback and 2. The lens is worth’s couple hundred quid and I don’t want him to get mad and damage it to spite me.
But I’m just really annoyed at his attitude and that I have had to take the blame because from what I’ve read, eBay will 99% of the time side with the buyer.
Did I do the right thing? Does this sort of thing happen to many other people? Would eBay have backed me?
Appreciate all your advice.
thanks,
dom

If you are referring to this listing for a Sigma lens, the generic eBay information that is attached to the listing does say it includes the lens hood under "bundle description" ... so, because this lens got associated with an eBay product, it did say that the hood was included.
Because of this, you should have noted that the hood was not included.

Same thing happened to me as im a seller and buyer. I sold a item that I just used the sell on like this link button. Buyer said I didnt let them know it was for parts. I posted it used but broken for parts only was written in complete description. After them opening a case and me receiving neutral feedback. Ebay didn't go one sided they simply squash it as a mutual complaint. Although how I have a neutral review which was **bleep** since buyer should read complete descriptions. Especially when I mentioned to do so next to condition category. Anyway, I now message buyers if I know they might over see the complete description just to cover my reputation. Never assume all buyers read complete descriptions even if the majority of us do. Theres buyers out there taking a gamble hoping they get lucky and that's just the way it is.

1. Would have simply advised the buyer to "return for refund". I have the same return condition as you and buyers have sent stuff back on their dime w/o issue.
2. Now we sell used stuff and some times things are missing that would be included with a new item like a manufacturers "hang tag" for a purse - we spell out it is not included at least twice - once in the text box beneath the headline and repeated in the description text box. The extra words don't cost any more and can save a headache or two. and then again in the description. Some buyers are just picky.

Negative feedback is not a factor in determining seller status anymore.
Ebay will not back you.

I got you.
In that case the guy is right and I am in the wrong.
Although I don't like that I made the mistake, I do feel better about paying the return postage.
I'll watch out for that one in future!
Thanks,
Dom

(I) Should have looked at the OPs listing but here is what is stated in the text box description supplied by the OP- 4th line down - "Comes with original hood, front and rear lens caps,......................"

Yes, I’m big enough to admit my mistake. The seller agreed to split the cost of the hood with me. Think I got off lightly in the end. Will chalk it off to experience. Won’t make that mistake again!!!
thanks for everyone’s advice, I really appreciate it.

And this is a great example of the difficulties associated with using the catalog. I have found I need to read every line in the catalog description, then explain where my item differs.
