Buyer claims item is defective when it isn't. How can I issue a partial refund?

I sold a 13" 2010 MacBook Pro. The buyer later request a return because the item was "defective". Buyer claimed the battery died at 50% and the wifi wasn't reliable. I accepted the return. I received the return yesterday and I have conducted my own tests only to find the buyer is wrong. I called eBay and I was told I can open a claim on the buyer with a chance of keeping the item and not having to refund. I'm not looking to take this guy's money and I'd prefer to offer a partial refund to compensate for the return shipping and the 10% restocking fee noted in the listing. I also don't want the buyer later opening a case on PayPal for something I've already dealt with on eBay.

I suspect the buyer was trying to get out of restocking and return shipping fees and that this is actually a case of buyer remorse. I charge restocking to avoid scams and compensate for the time it takes to test the item when I get it back. I also repair and sell these machines myself.

Tests peformed:

I was able to discharge the brand new third party battery from 93% to 5% without issue.

I performed a 32.23GB file transfer over wifi for 8-9 hours without issue.

I called eBay via phone and was told I can issue a partial refund and then call them back to close the case in my favor. The only problem is I don't know how to issue a partial refund. I'd prefer not to use the "send money" through PayPal option. I see options for sending a refund but none for a partial refund. How can I issue a partial refund with a good paper trail?

Thanks. You guys are always really helpful.

You can’t open a claim against the buyer. Just refund in full. If you ask eBay to step in, they will make you refund the buyer in full and give you an unresolved by seller strike. They will NOT deny the buyer a refund. He returned the item in the condition it was received it. Even if he sent back a damaged item, they would make you refund him in full. You do know that restocking fees will no longer be allowed starting in May right?

if this Ebay rep tells you you can keep the item and NOT refund, this rep is clueless ,how can a seller not refund when he has the item and it is in good condition?

There is no way you can do partial refund on EBAY,if you do it on Paypal, your Ebay FVF wil not be refunded prorate.

you have to refund in full to get your Paypal and EBAY Fee back and the case is closed.

Consider yourself EXTREMELY lucky to have received the item you sent in the condition you sent it.  Issue the full refund and be thankful they didn't swap it out with an old junk item.

OK kids, time to get the Dodge loaded up again. I hear 'Poppy's By the Tree' calling. This trip might be a long one too.
