I sold an expensive item on via my seller account. I shipped it via FedEx and due to the insurance amount of $500+, a signature requirement was automatically added at no charge. Today the buyer contacts me (shipped two days ago) about the expected delivery date tomorrow. He states that he won't be home for the next week and therefor cannot sign for the package. He also opened an INR case, now holding my payment. Since eBay's account created the label, the delivery cannot be changed. He feels that after the attempts are made and it's returned, the case will close in his favor (although he does want the item) as not delivered. One major concern of mine is that my return address is a PO Box. I usually switch FedEx and UPS shipments to my physical address, but neglected to do this time. I called eBay and they did not seem much of help on what to do. What should I do in this situation? I don't want to be screwed out of nearly $600 dollars. He does want the item delivered, but in a sense it's now my problem.

? He can not open INR before the expected delivery date ?
Our experience has been Fed Ex drivers "sign" themselves and just throw the package on the buyers porch.
And a Fed Ex return gets even worse sadly.
Sounds like your buyer might know how to game the system ?

So then the buyer should see if FedEx can hold the package or ship it to another address the buyer trusts.
He also opened an INR case, now holding my payment. Since eBay's account created the label, the delivery cannot be changed. He feels that after the attempts are made and it's returned, the case will close in his favor (although he does want the item) as not delivered.
INR cases cannot be done until the day after the delivery date. The payment is sadly on hold until the issue is resolved or eBay makes a determination. I can assure you that you might win because if you had tracking, you can prove the item was still in transit and you have this buyer who messaged you saying they won't get the item, so ebay can piece it together.

Now from what I see here, upload a tracking number and explain that the item is still in transit and not delivered to the residence. Since the item was not delivered, an INR will be hard to win for the buyer in this case.
What I can tell you from this is that FedEx might sign on the buyer's behalf, like @l5vw said. Or they may reattempt delivery. Either way, the buyer is responsible for making their own accommodations for the package coming.

Thanks for your helpful post. I think I may face with this problem in the near future.
