Amazon geoblocks Australia from U.S. site as tax change kicks in

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-amazon-com-australia/amazon-cuts-australia-from-its-u-s-site-to-a...

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc said on Thursday it will force Australians to use its Australian website instead of its much larger U.S. site to avoid a new sales tax, setting the stage for a showdown with rival eBay Inc in the No. 12 economy.

Yes.
Read the article. It states that this will be a win for eBay. Maybe eBay sellers will want to know why, when they get an uptick in sales from Australia.

Not likely.

Don't count ya chickens yet.    I'm out of this source now... UK maybe.

A number of factors make US buys not so competitive. laughing

Your postal rates are over priced and over rated for a start, and way too many are conned by this GSP rort that is even more so a case of 'overs for unders'.

It's doubtful the cost of enforcing GST on pissant sales will be 'cost effective' anyway.

Ha Ha Ha... masters of finance and fisical responsibility NOT.

The scummy ones that passed this [and I didn't vote for them] were influenced by a long standing 'rent seeker' franchiser of Retail Dept. Stores.  [Harvey Norman] if you want to look, a grubby multi-millionaire  that whinged for a few years complaining about unfair advantages OS sellers have.   The administration that implemented this only looks after that 'big end' of town anyway.

And here is the thing,  no GST is payable on 2nd hand goods domestically.... and no tax on a tax is allowed. So whats that old LP record now? New.... I think not.

There may be an uptick for small relatively inexpensive items that are posted to Oz by USPS 1st Class International (with e-DELCON).  eBay will collect the 10% tax from Oz buyers.  The seller needn't worry about it.  10% of an inexpensive item added to the purchase price won't break the bank.

Expensive items and the GSP and the new tax....that's a whole different story.

There are a lot of us sellers not in GSP ,so do search .     Far as USPS FCMI  it is  high  for  items over 10 Oz.s  runs  $20+  to Au  .   Items  under 10 Oz.'s  FCMI cost $12+  even if they are 5 Oz.'s -2 Oz.s  To Au  .   ..

Global Shipping Program = GSP

Goods and Services Tax = GST

Looks like ebay.com will be collecting this import duty/tax

https://sellercentre.ebay.com.au/SU18-2/Marketplace-Updates

Serious questions with this because 2nd hand goods are deemed 'GST free'.

How will ebay.com determine what goods are GST free or will they apply 10% on the item + shipping ?

Will buyers have to apply for a refund [of the 10% + admin fee] from the Aus tax Office [ATO]

Still think there will be a boost of sales to Australia?

I think not.

trinton@ebay   we have a problem.

That ebay.com.au link, mate.

https://sellercentre.ebay.com.au/SU18-2/Marketplace-Updates

In there I read this..

The Australian Goods and Services tax (GST) is a broad-based tax of 10% on most goods, services and other items sold or consumed in Australia.
Australian GST already applies to high value goods (>1,000 AUD) imported by consumers into Australia, and is collected from the importer at the Australian border (i.e., the recipient has to pay customs duty and taxes before they can get their parcel).

From 1 July 2018, Australian goods and services tax (GST) will apply to sales of low value goods (<=1,000 AUD) imported by consumers into Australia. However, this will generally be collected from the business or platform selling the item, rather than when the item arrives at the border.

....and from the ATO site this 'determination', albeit focing on business importers > on sellers.

https://www.ato.gov.au/law/view/document?docid=ESG/SGES20001/00001#main-content

This acknowledges the 'GST free' status of some goods <= AU$1,000.

So, how will ebay.com or ebay.com.au site determine if an item is 'GST free [non taxable] or will all and sundry be taxed and then a huge workload for buyers to seek return of the paid GST and fee from whoever gets it [ebay or ATO.] ???

Fair enough question, and what I'd like to know [in part] because that is what ebay tell in this  published 'Update'. ^ ^ ^

However, this will generally be collected from the business or platform selling the item, rather than when the item arrives at the border.

Perhaps the same 'A... zon' geoblock buyer lockout will be done on Int. ebay platforms?

...and,

Whoever collects this, will it be indiscriminately applied to 'GST free' items?

... never mind the fact the shipping will be +10% taxed , making it even less attractive to buy anything from an International location.  It makes an already expensive GSProg. shipping even more expensive, unless PB have been adding 10% and pocketing it prior to this law taking affect on the 1 July 2018.

There is no detailed invoice from the last time I got ripped off by this GSP/PB 'experience' (TM).

@dugoldstuff

Yes, do read the article fully [2nd story below is interesting too].

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-amazon-com-australia/amazon-geoblocks-australia-from-u-s-site-as-...

"An eBay spokesman said the U.S. company was working on a way to collect the Australian tax from sellers around the world without cutting access for Australians.

“eBay’s GST solution ... allows imports to Australia to continue without any structural barriers, redirects or blocks to the buyer experience,” he said.

So, does that mean the U.S. company is collecting GST for UK and Euro zone site sales too?

Ha.. and then this quote from a slimy ex-marketing spin doctor.

Y'all forgiven for not understanding the true nature of this lousy character.

Australian Treasurer Scott Morrison announced the change in April 2017, eight months before Amazon opened its Australian unit.

“The second-biggest company in the world, run by the richest man in the world, shouldn’t get a leave pass from paying tax in Australia,” Morrison said in an email statement on Thursday.

Nor should his closely aligned media mate - Murdock -  'get leave'... but why does he?

“If multinationals aren’t forced to pay their fair share of tax, they will have a competitive advantage over retailers here in Australia, on our own main streets and in our shopping centers.”

What a crock of 'it !

It's the consumers who pay this tax by using ebay, A..zon etc and importing goods, NOT his multinational buddies - they 'get leave'.

Nor does he mention the 'GST free' goods nobody considers.

Instead, Morriscum goes off on a tangent to avoid addressing the matter - his Govt. policy is to; cut big biz Co taxes, cut high income earner taxes, con low income earners with pitiful tax cuts worth crumbs, cut funding for public media broadcaster [ABC] that holds the likes of this one to account... and let major multinationals get away with paying little to NO tax here. eg. The Murdock 'News Limited' has paid zero tax for many many years.

No, I can't see any reason at all for an 'up tick' if everything costs 10% more.

Here is another  Question  ;   Ebay Isn't even  a true selling platform   Or  true controled  market  place  that doesn't have fulfilment  center wearhouse's .   they are a hosting sited  Venue  used mainly made up of  people selling  personal items and 3P seller  second market dealers.  with 10 to 15%  first hand   dealers.   The Only  International market  ebay.com U.S.   does push  in the  listing  item  page for a fee to it's sellers  , in the search on  ebay.UK   for buyers    .    I can See ebay Collecting  the GTS Tax   if the sellers paid a fee to have their items seen the Ebay.AU site search to get or looking too get the buyers  to buy their items .? ..

So, NO 'up tick' for sales to Australia... in fact NO sales at all.

I'm not alone in questioning why 'used' GST exempt goods are now being treated as 'new'.
