19 years on ebay and still getting the shaft

TL;DR

-Sold a working iPad on 11/24

-Buyer received on 12/1

-Buyer started return processing stating it didn't work on 12/29....28 days AFTER receiving the working item

-No contact has been made since then from the buyer

-1/18 I opened a case against the buyer to have the hold on my funds released. I was told he would be given 3 days to respond:

"Upon reviewing the account it shows that there is no confirmation from the buyer if they're having the same issue or not or if they returned the item or not. We appreciate you for reaching out to the buyer to offer a solution. We will place the case on hold for 3 days to give your buyer time to respond on the case. Please note that once the hold was released, we will take action based on the information provided."

-1/22 no response from the buyer and I get an email stating that ebay has sided WITH the buyer

-today, 1/23 I call ebay and they state that they are giving him 10 more days to return the item to me

This is beyond ridiculous. over 2 months since the end of the item with little to no communication from the buyer, and ebay still sides with him and keeps giving him time to try and return a working item.

19 years i've been on ebay and I'm still treated like **bleep** as a seller.

I'm confused ... if this were me, I would have simply called eBay and asked them to close the return in my favor since the buyer did not return the item.

Is this what happened when you "opened a case"?

By you 'opened a case against the buyer,' do you mean that you asked eBay to step in? If so, eBay is known for almost always siding with the buyer when that is done.

The seller is in a postion of no recourse at ebay these days.  Hear what happened to me:

I have received a defect because the package, although I sent and uploaded it on time, was lost by USPS.  When the buyer filed a case, I called them, called ebay, filed a missing package claim with USPS, harped on USPS who kept telling me to be patient until it was found.  Ebay told me not to worry it was not my fault. Next thing I know the buyer was refunded their money from my paypal account by ebay and I have a defect.  I tried to talk to ebay about this to at least get the defect removed, and got the canned responses that since there was not seller resolution and ebay stepped in, I have a defect.  I asked where is this policy for this type of case and got not answer.  I tried to ask for someone else to speak to and was refused. I also have been with ebay 8 years, and have never had anything like this happen to me before.  The rep just kept saying that the policy is when ebay has to intervene I will have a defect.  I am so very disappointed in ebay. This is not right.

Look carefully at the emails that you received from eBay.  Some of the canned emails generated from cases will state that you do not have to take any action ... others state that you need to work out things with the buyer.  Taking no action on both of these types of messages will get you a defect, however if the email effectively said "you don't need to do anything" or "wait on event X", and event X never happened ... then appeal the decision and plead your case with the facts of the emails received.

The defect can be reversed in these cases (I just had one removed in the last week).

If you've been with Ebay 8 years and this has never happened then consider yoursel lucky.  I have countless cases like this and worse.  What's maddeninbg you can call Ebay CS many tims and get different answers each time.  As a general rule I now call two times everytime I have an issue just to see i I get the same answer.  The honest truth is the Eastern Asia CS is just there to deflect.  There really is no customer service.  Here's my latest fiasco:  Customer orders item.  I ship next day to the Confirmed Address using an Ebay Label's USPS Label.  Four weeks later buyer files a non-receipt claim and in the claim readily states that he had made a mistake in his address (he admits he erred!!).  Well the address was Confirmed and labeled Seller Protction-Eligible so I figured no big deal.  Oh, contrare.  Since the tracking showed item non-deliverable to that address I was apparently not covered because it wasn't delivered.  So I do everything correct.  Ship to an Address labeled Confirmed.  Buyer admits right in the claim he had made mistake and the Malaysian CS can't do anything about it?  Let that all soak in.  Buyer admits fault and gets made whole and Seller who did everything right tkes it up the **bleep** and Ebay pretends to have CS?

Unfortunately this was told to me by the rep in a phone call.  No written record.  Wow.  I have been toprated for years and this is unbelievable. I really guess I have no recourse.  I guess when they say you do not have to take any action it is best not to believe them? Thanks for your input very much. Appreciated.

@3diamondhorse

There are countless stories of how the Far East Customer Service reps give misleading, unreliable advice.   They are either poorly trained, live in a culture where deception is acceptable, or they are specifically directed to say whatever you want to hear in order to get you off the phone.  This is not occassional behavior, but an established pattern - I've had two experiences in the last couple of months where Far East CS reps misled me, and one of those times ended up in a defect.

eBay Far East customer service is below bad ... bad customer service implies lack of resolution ... this customer service ends up damaging us further.

eBay messages and eBay policies are what you need to follow.
