Ok, I'm not a novice here, been using eBay for over 20 years. But I never ran into this particular situation with a seller before and it has me puzzled on what to do next. I purchased 6 boxes of Nicoderm patches. 5 were of the 14 count that were advertised, 1 was a 7 pack (incorrect). I don't want to return all of them when only 1 was wrong (I know that would be the expected route to take). I asked the seller if a partial refund would work since it's a small amount and involves only 1 of the packs. Seller says sure, but that I have to ask eBay for it. I advised that's not how it works, and that she should be able to do it easily on her end. She now asks for my address so she can send a check for the refund. 1) She already has my address since she sent me the patches. 2) I don't want a check (it's getting weird now...), just a partial refund to PayPal. I don't want to start a whole thing with her (her feedback is decent, but isn't the greatest...she seems difficult at times based on what I'm reading there), how should I proceed?

this is an interesting situation.not sure if it was one listing or not
anyways there are a couple things to do.............you can ask the seller for a partial refund and wait a day or so.
next you coud ask him to get with the program and remind him that you may just have to exercise your MBG rights
you are in the drivers seat with this one.if the seller balks then you can file a NAD and get a return label and all your money back..............sounds to me like the wrong item was sent

I did ask for a partial refund, but that's when they came back with sending me a check as the solution. It is clearly a NAD situation, but I really don't want to return all of them when only 1 of the 6 is incorrect. I don't believe I could just send 1 back under NAD and get a refund on only that particular item, could I? It was a single item auction with multiple items available, not a total set.

If you paid for all of them in one payment, it's set up that you have to return all of it. The seller can't just refund by sending a check. That would break ebay rules and ebay would have no record of the refund. It won't harm the seller if toy file an item not as described case as long as they accept the return.

Actually, I just started a return on it, and it asks how many I am returning (X of 6), I entered 1. Maybe something changed, but it does allow for a partial return now. Thanks for everyone's input!

It sounds to me like the seller doesn't know how to do a partial refund through eBay or is falsely terrified of doing that as they might get a 'ding' on their account.
We see ignorance all of the time and that is fine as long as one is willing to be educated to fix the lack of knowledge. But the irrational fear of a ding is another thing. I think many C-students get their first 100% when selling on eBay and are so fearful of losing that they do stupid stuff.
Not sure if you could educate them on how to do the partial refund with out them stressing out? Maybe they could come here and ask in a post in the Seller's section how to do a partial refund? I'm sure the Community would be glad to help!
BTW - a check is a dumb idea. They can send it and then a few days later get a stop payment from their bank. Second, why send a buyer, who is upset, a check which has your name, address and bank account number on it? Sounds ripe for identify theft to me. No, the right way to refund would be to send a Money Order. Gee, doesn't USPS sell those too?

I would reach out like you did and include a picture.
I would be clear I got 5 correct and 1 of the 6 was half the size, so effectively 5.5/6 was delivered.
Wherefore, I respectfully request 0.5/6 or 8.33% of the entire order be frefunded... If the order total was $150, I would request $12.50 for example via original return method.
Would tell seller to go to Seller Hub > Orders > All Orders... and from the dropdown "Send Refund" and send a partial refund... It will resolve this issue, and your seller account will not get dinged.
I would send this link telling the seller how:
... Otherwise, if you are a PayPal seller, you can issue the partial through PayPal
^^^ This will probably work unless this person wants to buy a return label. Thankfully, you can return 1 of 6 in which case you send the 7 patches back unopened on the seller's dime and can expect a FULL refund on that one unit or probably around $25.
