view counter doesn't add up

Why do I get views at the beginning of a 30 day listing, and then again about 2-3 days before the listing ends, but next to nothing in between? I get the feeling i'm not visible for most of the month. Is there some kind of algorithm cycle that takes place here? I'm not the first to mention this, should I say, fact? Ouch, that was harsh, I'm sorry.....

Newly listed items are likely to be higher up in search.

Ending soon items are likely to be seen in search.

In between, it is hit and miss.

Its all about folks using those filters my friend. Newly listed = "Oooo I might see someone listing cheap by accident." or "Lets see the newest coolest." Then there is the filter for ending soonest = "Lets see if I can snipe a listing that nobody has bid up yet."

That is quite literally the answer to your question though my very thorough answer does absolutely nothing to help you get views the other 25 days a month. If I figure that out I'm sure ebay and other sellers would provide my retirement income in one fail swoop, so I too am paddling the same boat along side of you. Haha goodluck 4040.

You get views at the beginning of the listing because people are searching under newly listed, and you get views at the end of the listing because people are searching under ending soonest.

In between those times, the listing may have a harder time of being seen, which accounts for your not seeing views then.

You're welcome!

Yes, it all depends on which option people prefer to use when searching, but what you are seeing is not uncommon.

I think it is a fact that listings get more views at the beginning and the end, but I do not think it is algorithmic. I think it is a combination of many factors:

  • As a buyer, I have well over 100 saved searches on multiple accounts. Each day I get a dozen emails notifying me that new listings have appeared that match my saved searches. Almost all of those items get a view from me in the early days of the listing.
  • As a buyer, I also have broad searches that I perform daily. I run those searches by "Newly Listed" so I can snap up attractive fixed price items early before others see them. So newly listed items in those searches get views in the early days of the listing.
  • After I run those broad searches as Newly Listed, I run them by "Ending Soonest" so I can snap up any auction listings that have attractive prices and are nearing the end (or any fixed price items I may have missed). So those items get views at the end of their listing period.
  • When I put something on my watch list, I tend to review the items that are closing in the next day or two to decide if I want them. So again,
  • Lastly, when a watch list item is on its last day, eBay usually sends me an email telling me it is ending. So once again, this often prompts me to give those items a view at the end of their listing period.

I would say that out of every 100 items I view, 95 of them are in their first of last days of the listing.

So again, I do not think it is algorithmic - I just think this is the way many regular buyers use the site.

Thank you!! I'm absorbing this, and also agree very much with what you say. Not only is it common sense, but, actually how it all pans out here, on Ebay.

Pay attention to when you list something BIN and the second you send it live it somehow has 1-5 views in the 1/10 of a second it takes from you to hit the send it live button to the second your page loads.

Ebay is nonsense in a can
