My setting for Variations is turned on, yet every listing I try to make says "Variations not available for this category". How do I find out which categories this works with. I can't believe I happen to choose an ineligible category every time. What's the deal??

I'm not sure how up to date this is but on the following page you can see a list of Categories that support Variation listings.

Don't overlook the possibility that the error message is inaccurate. Are you using a phone or a real computer? And are you starting with a fresh blank listing form, not using relist or sell similar?
One strategy might be to find a variations listing in the category you want to use, and use the "Have one to sell? Sell now" link under the gallery image.

If you want to for sure get less sales then use variation listings. Most seasoned buyers will not click on them due to being disappointed nearly every single time in the past by the variation they want being out of stock or priced poorly.

Have you consulted the Policy pages for this? That is normally the place to start. Ebay has a rule for most everything.

I’ve never heard that theory before but it may depend on the category that a buyer is looking at. I personally don’t like variation listings that have huge variations in pricing. The lower priced items in those listings tend to be out of stock or have nothing to do with the search terms used. But in many cases I would rather look at a variation listing rather than scroll past 10 or 20 listings that are identical other than the color or size.

I found the list in another post, but thank you. I finally got it figured out. I just took one I had with variations and made a template, then just started playing with catagories that were reasonably close to what I needed. The trick was finding one that also allowed the personalization. It's just really trial and error.
