unpaid Item case closed but buyer did not get a Negative feedback

I had a buyer from Canada who admitted that he had buyer's remorse and did not want to pay for the item. After weeks of back and forth emails, I finally threw in the towel and opened an Unpaid item Case which I then closed after no resolution. I got the final value fee credited back to me however, the buyer did not get any negative feedback. I called ebay and was told that the buyer will just have a record in ebay and "if he does it again he will have limitations on his buying capacity". I voiced out that that does not really give a clear picture of what this buyer's credibility in the buying community. I also pointed out that I had been given a negative review in the past when an item automatically relisted and got sold while I was away. I was told by ebay "oh i'm sorry that happened to you but we don't want to penalize buyers and turn them away."

Really. That's how you want to treat your sellers? #()@%!

unpaid Item case closed but buyer did not get a Negative feedback

Sellers have not been able to give buyers negative for eleven (11) years now.  The rep that told you that was correct, and they don't want to turn off buyers.  Without buyers, you won't be selling anything.  Most sites don't allow their customers, buyers, to be shamed.  They may actually pay many, many other sellers, who will be happy with that.

The buyer got a non payment strike when they didn't pay.  It seems you are unaware of this.  It works automatically, and the rep was again correct when she told you that the buyer would have limitations on his buying capacity.  Sellers can block those with unpayment strikes.  Most sellers use the most popular and strictest block that blocks those with two strikes in one year.  Those buyers won't be able to bid or buy from many, many sellers.   You can set your blocks and enjoy this protection as well.

It's better they admitted remorse and didn't pay, than to have paid and claimed a false SNAD and you would be paying for return shipping if you want it back, and maybe getting an incorrect item back.

So it happens.

The last time  a buyer got a negative feedback was May 19, 2008.

As the CS rep tried to explain, we can't see a buyer's nonpayment strikes but they can have a significant impact on the member's ability to purchase from sellers who have set up their Site Preferences to block them.

A lot of sellers have the same feeling, it just doesn't seem fair. But if you think about it, if buyers got negative feedback, why would they continue to shop? Unpaid item strikes can really limit buying power from any seller who blocks the. You can block anyone with two or more strikes in the past six months. So they still see your item, but when they try to bis, they get a message saying they are blocked due to previous unpaid items.

Don't do this.  Save yourself a lot of stress.

You can file the unpaid item dispute just 48 hours after the end of auction or time of purchase.  You then wait at least 4 days more before you can close it for nonpayment and give the buyer a strike.  No need to wait weeks for payment.

As for the back and forth emails, this will rarely end well.  Either file the UID after your predetermined time limit without payment, or when the buyer tells you he is not going to pay.  Once he says he won't pay there isn't likely anything you could say that would convince him to - so don't argue.  If you need to respond at all just say "thank you for letting me know" then file either the UID or cancellation.

I'm not sure the message is quite that blunt.  I believe that it would most likely be the same messsage that would be received whenever someone is blocked: the seller is not accepting bids from you.

@ten_to_twelve  I know  it is frustrating but  by opening a case and then closing in your favor the buyer's account   is noted , too many of these and the buyer for sure will see limits or restrictions.

Don't spend anymore time on this and continue to be a great seller, good buyers will find you and you will have an awesome time selling on eBay

OP, the earliest ebay allows a UID to be opened is at 48 hrs; many open UIDs 48 hrs later.  You don't have to use 48 hrs as your time to open a UID, you can choose a later time frame, but you don't have to go weeks and weeks, hoping to be paid, before you open the UID.

I do t remember if anyone posted that you can set a bidder block to block anyone with two or moreUIDs in the last year.

that works much better than a neg when most sales occur before the seller can check.

Don't waste any time on to-and-fro with a buyer.

In 48 hours, you can open an unpaid item case and if the buyer doesn't pay, close it 4 days later to get your fees back and the buyer gets an unpaid item strike noted on the file.

Alternately, once the buyer tells you he doesn't want to pay for the item, just CANCEL the order giving the reason BUYER REQUESTED and it's don't almost immediately.  It's uncertain whether the buyer gets any kind of strike, but eBay does keep track of cancelled orders and has been known to limit the buying privileges of buyers who ask for/and get their orders cancelled too often.

In any case, sellers can't leave neutral or negative feedback for buyers and lost that ability back in 2008.  They also can't leave critical comments in positive rated feedback.  Basically, feedback for buyers long ago became an exercise in happy shiny compliments.

I'm obviously green and unaware of such option as blocking a buyer. Thank you.

If this is the only ID the OP has, he only has 36 feedback for selling in those 16 years.  A very infrequent seller.  Not surprising that he is not familiar with all the ins and outs of selling.

eBay doesn't make those blocks and buyer requirements easy to find or obvious.

The buyer "block", and buyer requirements are better than (-) feedback.

There is nothing to stop a buyer with negative feedback (unless it exceeds (-1), and blocking requirements are set), as a seller does not see the buyers feedback until after they purchase.   Also, if they did have (-) feedback they could, and do just open another account, or purchase as a "guest".
