Did you mean:

ugh, these skittish bidders

I've been selling parts in lots with a 9.99 starting bid.  It's working out but now the trouble begins.

Not really asking for advice as much as just laying out the situation and how I handled it for anyone who might be interested.

One guy was high bidder on 4 auctions. After the fact but before he paid he sent me a message saying to make sure to put it all in 2 large flat rate boxes to save on shipping cost (each auction had a fixed shipping rate of $15).  Yeah, except for the fact that it's over 100# total and would take probably 8 or 10 LFR boxes.  So I told him it wouldn't fit in that small of a volume and that I'd send him an invoice for the total as soon as I had it all packed up.  It took a 27 gallon and an 18 gallon tote to get everything packed and the total shipping was $60, exactly the total of the shipping that was clearly stated in each of the four auction listings.

He freaks out.  "That's way too much shipping, I can't afford to pay that" and asks me to ship it free or cancel.  Then 10 minutes later, he pays, and says ship it.  Now this morning I get another message saying how the shipping is way too much (even though he knew when he bid what the shipping was going to be) and to cancel.

I was tempted to offer to pay the shipping.  The stuff went for way more than I was expecting.  But, after thinking about it, this guy is clearly remorseful about buying this stuff, and is trying to use the shipping as an excuse to cancel the order.  In that light, I just canceled the order and gave him a refund.  It's not worth the potential storm of b. s. coming this way when he receives the shipment.

Cancel, and block.  Done.

Agree totally with your solution.  Having an unhappy customer before you ship is almost guaranteeing trouble.

There needs to be a restocking fee and/or a big warning that you are committing to buy when bidding on auctions. Cancelling a BIN item that does not have an auction attached within an hour doesn't hurt the seller so much. Cancelling after winning an auction costs the seller almost every single time. I've seen enough auction items relisted to know that 99% of the time they never end as high. Enough already with no repercussions for buyers that make decisions that cost sellers money.

And then the guy sends me a message saying I should have only refunded the shipping and that he would pick it up.

gawd, now he's stalking me via messages.

Blocking someone should mean they can't contact you or even see your listings.
