Not half, just 12% of the total with shipping. Another 2.5 % paypal + 30 cents. The other possibilities is if you are using add ons with your listings, i.e. reserves etc.

If it looks like they're taking half, you're doing something wrong with the numbers.
Feel free to post an example to show how they're taking half.

Something is up with your numbers
How are you doing your bookkeeping?

I sold an item yesterday for $11.30. eBay took $3.24 in transaction fees and $2.50 for an ad Fee. I made $5.56. How is this fair? In the past, I could get the savings for using eBay shipping, but now the buyer gets the break. When I started eBay quite a few years ago, they only took 10% and ad fees were not hefty. I am about to give up and move to another venue. I feel your pain.

How is it fair?
Fees %ages are known before listing.
Ad fee is an "option" that you chose so that eBay could get a bigger bite.
(no ad fee, and $8.06 on an $11.30 sale looks pretty good)
When eBay was taking 10%.............. PP was also getting a little bite of the $$.

They took out the transaction fees, but then they added in another $2.50 under Ad fee General. As a small seller, I find my items rarely get seen, unless I promote. The small time seller, doesn't mean much to them anymore.

Not sure how you even found this thread but when you say "I feel your pain" you are talking about the pain someone was feeling 3 and a half years ago.
Just FYI, you might want to start a new thread. This one is so old it's from the Paypal days. It will soon be closed to further replies by the moderators.

You are being charged 13.25 % just like the rest of us.
Anything more than that is on you.
FYI
I am a "small seller".
I don't pay ad fees.
My items get seen.

The reason it is fair is because you alone are in control of the choices that affect your bottom line. eBay only provides the framework—the venue. It has no idea what each seller’s costs are in regards to the items listed. It cannot ensure one’s profit.
The seller calculates his costs (including eBay fees) and his needed profit margin. Once all the data is collected, he sets the price accordingly, to cover those financial needs.
