I mentioned to my hubby that many people here strongly advise against asking for FB, that it's tacky if not actually ill-advised. He was surprised, says he runs into companies asking for FB all the time.
Maybe true. I'm still not swayed.

Yes, there are a few dining places I visit, that when they give you the receipt, they ask you to go to the web page and leave feedback. And by doing so, you get a code to use for a future free item.

My husband said the same thing when I was discussing this with him recently.
but I pointed out that a lot of the places that are asking him for feedback are private websites that can control their own reviews and get rid of anything negative that they don't want showing on their pages.

So could it be debated,
they're actually Buying feedback?

Do not ask for feedback. It IS tacky and you will get some you might not like. Some people may view asking as a sign of desperation and will ask for a partial. It happened to me years back.

I worked for a new car dealership for years, the service manager was buying customer surveys for a full tank of gas. He would fill them out himself and submit them to Chrysler. It got us the 5 star rating.

On eBay feedback is voluntary.
And eBay does not use FB to measure a seller's account.
I leave feedback on shipment, and get about a 60% response rate, which is higher than reported averages.
But fewer and fewer online sites are using it.
In my opinion it's a legacy from the early days of the interwebs when many users werejust thrilled to makenew friends and even more were suspicious of sending money to strangers.

I get a lot of FB, too, but my husband was genuinely surprised when I was adamant about never ASKING for it.
Thinking about it, the few times in recent ages that I've been asked for my FB from another seller, it's been a long-winded form letter from a mega-seller. Small sellers aren't asking me for it. (I go in periodically and leave FB for a bunch of people at one time).

Since feedback always has the possibility of biting you in the butt, I never want more. Of course positive looks good, but the red/gray really stand out.
I know feedback does not count in my evaluations, but since ebay has a habit of changing up what will or will not count, why ask for trouble. Return cases used to count, then didn't count, and it seems they will count again by this fall, and in normal ebay fashion -- be retroactive. How far behind might feedback be in again counting against us on our evaluations?

Not to be argumentative but rather informative, Ebay actually does consider feedback when evaluating accounts. Here is a screenshot showing just one example, I have seen many more...

It's quite a different thing when a company asks for feedback vs an Ebay seller.
A company can simply be ignored, but an Ebay seller asking for feedback is like a teenager being nagged to clean their room. The buyer may actually be doing the seller a favor by NOT leaving feedback. The transaction may not have been great for them, but they let it go. They may be only too happy to tell exactly what the shortcomings were if pressed to do so.
And there is always the chance they will leave a red doughnut that says:
HERE'S THE FEEDBACK YOU BUGGED ME FOR!
True story.
