shipping tubes

I had a lot of trouble today trying to ship in 28 x 3 x 3 shipping tubes, weight 7 ounces via USPS.  The system refused to print a shipping label until  I changed the measurements to 8 x 3 x 1, same weight.  I am going to be using a lot of these shipping tubes for special paper I sell.  How do I get around this issue?

What shipping method are you using? The 28 may exceed the allowable dimensions for that method.

I remember in the past seeing something about 24 inches.  I live on a small island and only ship USPS.

The maximum allowed length for a First Class package is 22 inches if you are purchasing postage online.  At retail prices, the size limit is a length-plus-girth of 108 inches.  Starting in April, USPS Priority Mail has a $4 surcharge for any tube over 22 inches.

For online size limit, see section 8.3.2.d:  https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/201.htm#ep1097318

For retail size limit, see section 6.4.d: https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/101.htm#ep1002718

Next time I have to ship in the tube, I'll fib and say 24" and see if USPS will accept that.  I hate to lie.

Don't fib. They will catch that and you'll probably be charged an over-size fee as well. The buyer will be very unhappy if it comes postage due.

USPS has installed equipment at their sorting centers which checks the weight and dimensions of all packages. A piece that is ineligible for First Class package shipping will be upgraded to Priority Mail rates and the difference in underpaid postage will be charged to your account.

For First Class Mail you are over the Maximum Length allowed (23") - believe you would be fine for Priority Mail
