If I insured an expensive order going to the GSP hub is there any reason to expect they will report damage and file an insurance claim with the P.O. themselves? Or would that just be a waste of money?

It would protect you if it's lost. Just double box with bubble wrap between boxes and around the item. Make sure there is space between the item and sides of box. That should prevent shipping damage.

I suspect a waist of money. Insurance is for your protection the the receivers.
There in no rules or laws that say a receiver has to participate in shipping insurance claims.
Of course most shippers will say it is not packaged correctly and don't pay anyway.
So will some wont.
If the total sale is over 250 make sure to get a signature confirmation on the package.

As others pointed out, insurance is for your benefit only. For lost in transit, especially.
Searched to see if I could find the thread - a few months back on another board, poster shared GSP forwarded a damaged item onto the Buyer and did not handle or document at GSP level and the mess that ensued.
We no longer use GSP and ship to Canada ourselves. If this is expensive, I would not be sending to GSP, but that is just me. ymmv

I thought about that option, too. Will the carrier get someone at the Hub to sign for the boxes?

You have to do this due to ebays rules: The person lately to be signing seem to be the shipper: but GPS is aware of such rules and so far has signed for the ones I sent that way. (Note due to shipping problems I have not used GSP for some time).

of course the last time (recently ) I paid for Signature Confirmation the customer reported that the carrier just threw the box on the porch and never attempted to get a signature.

You're many years late with that number. If the total payment if $750 or more, add Signature Required to the tracking.

Insurance would only cover you and you're only responsible for the package until it reaches the GSP hub in Erlanger, KY. After that it's not your problem. I would not take out insurance but that's just me. As austin Power would say "i like to live dangerously". I have been using GSP for years and have never had a problem.

I generally insure $500+ packages (80¢ per $100) because it makes good economic sense.

Buying insurance through THIS ongoing criminal enterprise whose existence is dependent upon allowing its Buyers rip-off its Sellers is the online marketplace definition of insanity.
Day after day, I see sellers post on this forum that international insurance is a waste of money.
Which coming from a company that makes you accept ANY and ALL returns, and then charges you a higher Final Value Fee for accepting returns. ( WOW) For details, search ebay's help section for "Additional Final Value Fees"
If you want to buy insurance, buy it from a reputable company or in other words not from ebay

I could not agree more. The GSP is one of the few things I can comment eBay on. It does slow the process a bit in getting the item to the buyer but most buyers do not seem to have a problem with that and eBay does an excellent job of turn around on packages through the GSP center as well as updating the tracking information as it moves from the U.S. carrier to the international one.
