I am thinking of listing a number of individual items, along with a note that if they buy three at one time they will get free shipping. Anyone have much success with this approach?? Also, what are possible problems to watch for. Many thanks.

I wouldn't fuss with it, personally. They could buy three, and return two.

Just use free shipping and set up quantity discounts.
