seller used wrong payment method, wants to relist it after its already been shipped.

Label was made at 12:28pm and package was dropped off and departed USPS building at 4:17pm. Buyer contacts me at 5:23pm to inform me they used the wrong payment method and wished to use another one. I explained to them I would normally relist the item but wouldn't due to the item already on the way to them and they could just not pay me after I cancel it to relist it. They tell me its their relatives card and they canceled it through the bank already.

would eBay not make them use a different method automatically if it was canceled through the bank?

They have also offered to send a check which sounds odd.

buyer is a 14 year old account, not a brand new user.

If it's already paid for and shipped, there is nothing you can do now.   I suppose they could return it.   I would just explain it's already been shipped and there is no way a seller can change the payment method.  That was an option for them to choose before they paid.

The computer owner (the relative) selected "Keep Me Signed In Unless I Sign Out".

Your buyer didn't notice the relative was still signed in. Then made the purchase with the owner's account.

In a perfect world, your buyer would have signed the owner out and then signed themself in before shopping.

You shouldn't and can't get involved with a monetary dispute between two out of state relatives that are unrelated to you.

Dear buyer,
I am unable to cancel the sale and relist it because the USPS has possession of the item. You will need to reimburse your relative with cash, Paypal, Venmo or another payment service so they can pay off their credit card balance.
Sincerely,
Seller

The only possible solution I could think of is to make them pay for it again before you cancel and refund the first listing. That way you have the second payment secured. Then upload the tracking number (from the first purchase) to the second transaction by marking as shipped manually.

If they aren't willing to trust you to pay for the second one before you cancel the first, then they are probably trying to scam you.

Not a good idea, the seller would end up with a sale for which they do not have any tracking or even an acceptance scan.

I have been able to copy the same tracking number to multiple purchases. This happens once in awhile when I fail to combine them during bulk shipping but I notice I have two labels going to the same person. I sell a lot of light items and so I can void one of the labels and usually send them both under 4 oz. Then I will manually upload the tracking to the other transaction.

So I'm thinking he could do the same thing and upload the tracking number for the item that's already in transit to the second transaction.

I should add that you would need to tell the buyer that they would have to use the same eBay account and shipping address for it to work

Another idea is to ask them if they could just write a check to their relative instead for the cost

Have you done that when the first shipment has already been accepted by USPS and the package is in transit?

I know people bring packages to USPS all the time and then after USPS has the item they go home and manually upload the tracking number into eBay.

So I guess I just assumed whether or not it has been scanned wouldn't matter. I don't think anything would get disabled from being able to upload your tracking to your package based on USPS having possession.

I get this issue from time to time. For whatever reason, the buyer messages to cancel because something is up with the payment (source, card, billing addy, etc) after the package was shipped.

I never involve myself with any of that. I should be covered with seller protection as long as the tracking shows delivery. I don’t care when buyers tell me this, even when some say the their card transaction will end up getting reversed. All I know is that eBay gave me the green light to ship, and I did. I always just reply that sorry the package was already shipped out and will arrive soon. Any payment issues can be handled directly with eBay if they want. As far as I know, I don’t think any of these ever came back with any sort of reversal or even chargeback.

And I’m guessing this sorta thing has happened to me about a dozen times. So it’s kinda rare.
