Recently had someone open a return but they realized they were mistaken when I explained to them more about the product. They wrote: I see the pictures now. You are right. Thanks for the quick reply.
They never closed the case though so I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

Ask them to close it.
Some will say just let it time out, but I do not always trust that.

Once a case is open they have 5 days to return it back with tracking.
If nothing received in I believe 30 days, you can call and ask that ebay close the case in your favor.

Like I said once they open a case they have 6 days to return an item with tracking.
Obviously since they were mistaken they will never send anything back.
So, in 30 days, I think, all you do is call, they will see that buyer never returned the shoes, so they will close in your favor. Buyer does not have to cooperate or get involved. Since he never sent the shoes back in the time allowed, he loses the case.

yes but what do you do when they basically say they realized they were wrong but still leave the case open? I never heard from this person again after this. I wrote a few times but still no reply.
You don't have to do anything!
If the buyer does not return the item the case will close 30 days after it was opened.
If you want to waste a bunch of time you can call eBay a week after you authorized the return and ask them to close it for you.
Two options, one takes ZERO time the other might involve hanging on the phone for an hour.
End result of either option is exactly the same.

So it is 30 days.
Thanks for clarifying. Ebay page is a bit vague.
Very explicit on how long seller has to refund buyer after he receives the item back - 10 days.
But very vague on how long before seller can close a case when a buyer refuses to cooperate.

Yes you have to accept the request, ebay gives you 4 days to respond , don't let it hang the buyer may then escalate it with ebay for you not responding If it is a case of doesn't match description
accept & let ebay issue the return label, at that point the buyer has 5 business days to print it.
If they don't print the label then after 5 business days call and have ebay escalate the case then they will send you an email closing the case in your favor.
First ebay message will show you this you opened a case
2nd message will be this

No. They have 5 days to return it once the return is approved.

You just repeated what I posted.
But you have to wait another 30 days before ebay will step in.
