Just noticed, for the first time, a column in a sold item awaiting payment that says "Record number". I click on it and it says "sales record number" and displays a three-digit number. What on earth is this? Can't find any topic mentioning it and have never seen it before.

@voodooelectronics I can't say with absolute certainty, but if it is an item that hasn't been paid yet it won't show a "proper" order number. I think the number assigned may be the number the sale may have been. So if it was your 535th sale then the unpaid item would have the number 535 attached to it till the buyer pays. If they don't pay then it just stays that number.

Actually I may be wrong and am confusing your question with another part of the order information.

@gwzcomps I think you're actually right - it's the next number in the total sales. Its been a while since I haven't had an instant pay, but I recall seeing that (in my case 4 digit number, 9-thousand something) some months back with a best offer and realising that this was the number of sales I'd had, then this number was replaced by the actual order number once it was paid for. Unless I'm just losing my mind.

Thanks for both (all) your thoughts, eBay won't let me mark them 'helpful' but the last. Weird site getting weirder.
The total number of sales theory sounds reasonable, I didn't know such records even existed. Strange that eBay itself doesn't seem to know what their own data is.

-- now that the same item has been paid there's no such column or number any more. Will have to quick-check the "Awaiting Payment" section next time a listing ends. If it is the "total number of sales" that would mean I've got feedback for roughly half of my sales, so that seems to support it.

The sales record number is your lifetime sales total in transactions. Clicking on my most recent sale, it is record number 29980 .. the 29,980th order Ive had (over past 20+ years)

You can see the sales record no. In the order details.
