About a month ago I had a potential customer ask me about a item that was out of stock and asked me to notify him/her when I get more. Due to old age I can't remember what that item was. What are the chances that ebay would add a "Notify me when this item becomes available" button for items that are out of stock? Doesn't Amazon have that? Wouldn't that be helpful to both buyers and sellers?

Hey, please notify me when you've got some Lions Club banners back in stock. They're a more popular item than you might think.

Thanks.
I just checked my folders and my Inbox. I have messages dating back to March of this year, so looks like it's 180 days?

The earliest message I have received still in my inbox in this account is from June 17th.
The earliest message in my Sent folder is from March 22nd.
Perhaps there is not a single limit, but a combination of the number of messages and date limit, something like up to a hundred messages from the last six months.
I have another account with fewer messages in my inbox, but going back as far as March 19th.

Tried to do a search in my ebay messages but couldn't find it. Much like ebay's regular search is broken, I think the message search is also broken. 😉

I guess you'll just have to make sure the item is listed & hope for the best. I imagine they'll keep their eyes open unless they found another.

At the risk of being blunt your mistake was in expecting someone else to do what you should have done for yourself.
From the get-go I have always maintained a WantList.DOC file on my computer.
Anytime I made a promise, or a quote, or received a request such as yours, etc I entered it there. Never had trouble finding it later.

Invest in large, bright colored Post-It notes (or a much cheaper look alike) and stick it on the inside of the door you use to the leave your residence most often or the necessary room or your refrig or cookie jar or all 4 places.
PS : Don't feel alone will celebrate the 15th anniversary of having my Medicare Membership Club Card later this December - CRS syndrome and the Common Cold** is incurable.
** used to use grain alcohol (aka ever clear - 190 proof) in collage to cure it - drank about 2 shot glasses sitting on the edge of my bed - didn't go blind but it seem to work the next morning. Probably not recommended by the CDC

Although not a solution to the scenario outlined in your post above, there is such a function (external to, and not managed by eBay) for buyers available here:
https://automatedsearches.com/
It works brilliantly. I use it for a few items that I might want to resell. I am alerted by email and text when they are listed on eBay.
(I suspect that eBay could easily incorporate this sort of functionality wholesale into its own operations. Maybe they will one day do so using AI.)

Automatedsearches is basically a third-party version of eBay's existing Saved Search feature, with a few additional options, such as the ability to run searches more often than once per day.

You gave me a valuable heads-up on this issue, so thanks for that.
I need to be saving any important emails.

How about a voice reminder on my cassette player? 😉
Physical note. Up, down, left side, right side of my computer monitor.
I will mail you a pencil, and a sticky note pad😂
Or a permanent marker and you can write it on your hand😂
I use the tattoo method.

@inhawaii : Your Ebay messages stored ON Ebay will not last very long. Ebay throws them out after 2-3 months. Go to the email address you have tied to your Ebay account and search those emails that landed there since those will remain in your off-Ebay account indefinitely. (I assume you are not throwing out your backup copies.)
Since his quote of 'notify me when this item becomes available' is pretty distinctive (you probably remembered it accurately when writing your posting title here) then just search your emails for any occurrence of the word 'notify' and you should find the original message. The subject of THAT message is most likely under the title of the listing he was asking about.
