Hello,
I was under the impression that when you listed in an "Auction" style format in conjunction with a "Buy It Now" price, that once you receive an auction bid the "Buy It Now" (BIN) would no longer be available.
Am I completely wrong about that or is there something I must do to configure it like that?
I had 9 unique bidders on an item, bringing it to $88, with 23 watchers and, I think, it was just under 24 hrs left, so I was hopeful that it would surpass the $111, but somebody wound up using the BIN to end the auction at $111.
Thank you in advance,
Tom

There are 4 categories where the BIN option remains available until bidding reaches 50% of the BIN price; clothing is one of those categories. But the BIN should have been gone when the first bid was placed anyway, since the opening bid ($65.56) was above 50% of the BIN price ($111.11). The only other time the BIN persists is if the auction has an unmet reserve.
One potential for a glitch here is that the user ID who used the BIN option was also the current high bidder when he made that purchase. But that should not have given him access to the BIN price option.

The 4 categories in which the BIN option remains available until the bidding reaches 50% of the BIN price are:
1. Parts & Accessories (eBay Motors)
2. Tickets
3. Clothing, Shoes & Accessories
4. Cell Phones & PDAs
Many years ago eBay tried to drop the experiment with "sticky BINs" but the programming failed and they never got it fixed. The first 10 or 20 posts in this thread tell the sad tale:

It depends upon the category.
"When someone bids, the Buy It Now option usually disappears; however, in the case of reserve price listings, the Buy It Now option remains until the reserve price is met. In some categories, the Buy It Now option may continue to be available after the first bid for a limited time."

There are a few categories where the BIN price stays after there is a bid. I'm not sure which categories it affects, I just remember ebay announcing that at one point.

We've always called it a "sticky BIN."
Your situation is odd because bidding was at more than 50% of the BIN, but looking at the listing your starting price of $65 was higher than 50% of the BIN $111 so maybe that's why the BIN stuck? No idea, really.
You set the pricing on this one, and if you're disappointed with the outcome then you set your prices too low. The item could have sold for as little as your auction start price of $65 and when you listed you were willing to let it go for $111.

Current bid of $55.55 on another listing that has BIN $88.88
???????????????????????
Is it possible that eBay has coded to %50 of the difference between the starting price and the BIN rather than when it reaches 50% of the BIN ??????

Another situation where starting bid is more than 50% of BIN. Supports my guess above.

Mine was the shoe category, so that likely explains it. I was unaware of the exceptions to the rule.
Thanks for the replies and sharing your knowledge.
Have a great day,
Tom

I didn't use a reserve price, but thank you just the same for the answer and info. It is useful to know.
