I don’t know. My GTC always get a new item number and the counter resets. I guess it’s still the same. It hasn’t been long enough to know since the change happened so I could be wrong now. I’ll keep an eye on my listings to see if it’s changed.
You have not been using a GTC duration then. You're describing a listing with a 30 day duration and automation rules, set to automatically RELIST at the end of its cycle, not RENEW as it would if it was GTC. There's a big difference.
GTC keeps the same item number, and all the history including view counts stay attached.

Thank you for explaining that, but people who are watching are not as many as people who have just viewed, right? Maybe I'm missing something.

Normally there are going to be more views than watchers. I wouldn't overthink this. You are an experienced seller, and I'm sure you currently have methods to decide when to give up on a listing. I see the views/watchers, and sometimes it influences my decision and sometimes it doesn't.

how do you decide which listings to check? Do you go into them all routinely?
Yes my morning routine is first to check Paypal and print out Sold items.
Then I go to eBay and check my Active Listings, which are in date order for About to Close.
(GTC does close, but then automatically reopens.)
I look at views and - this is my practice- at the Note I made of the original listing date.
Since this is basically a scan, the whole process over all my active selling accounts takes maybe 15 minutes.
Then I package the Sold items and am ready for new tasks.
Like laundry.
